The Japanese tenor, Hiroshi Amako, was born snd grew up in Tsu, Japan, and later moved to North Wales. He read music at Trinity College Cambridge (2011-2014), where he was also a choral scholar and sang tenor in the Trinity College Choir of Cambridge (Director: Stephen Layton). He is a postgraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London, studying with Ryland Davies (voice) and Iain Ledingham. He is generously supported by a Help Musicians UK Maidment Award, The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, The Josephine Baker Trust and The Royal Academy of Music.
Recent stage appearances include the title role of Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring with Cambridge University Opera, Peter Quint in B. Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Dr. S in Nyman’s The Man who mistook his Wife for a Hat, Ruggero in Puccini’s La Rondine in RAM opera scenes, and as part of the chorus in Royal Academy Opera’s production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night.
Hiroshi Amako is a seasoned oratorio soloist, with a particular enthusiasm for J.S. Bach, reaching the finals in the 2015 London Bach Society Bach Singer’s Prize, as well as being a regular soloist for Royal Academy of Music/Kuhn Foundation: Bach: Cantata Projects. Concert appearances feature George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Tippett’s A Child of Our Time and Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers. He also appears regularly as soloist for the Harpenden-based ensemble Amici Voices and Players (Director: Terence Charlston) as the Evangelist for J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and St. Matthew Passions (BWV 244), and as a soloist in the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248). Aside from solo work, he sang with the ensemble The Gesualdo Six (September 2014-June 2016), who were one of the 2015-2016 St. John Smith’s Square Young Artists. He has also sung with choirs such as The King's Consort (Director: Robert King), Polyphony (Director: Stephen Layton) and Facade Ensemble. As a budding recitalist, he is part of the Royal Academy Song Circle; he has recently performed in the Wigmore Hall in their 115th Anniversary Celebratory Concert series, as well as in the Embassy of Japan’s Green Park Youth Concert Series.. He also occasionally plays the modern and Baroque violin, and used to play in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. |
