The German-born Scottish bass-baritone, Dominic Philip Barberi, studied at English Martyrs School in Hartlepool. In June 2009 he noved to Glasgow, Scotland. He was awarded his Master of Music degree in Performance with Distinction from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, having studied with Stephen Robertson. During his studies he won the Jean Highgate Scholarship Competition and was recipient of the Oratorio Prize. He sang in the final of the Frank Spedding Lieder Competition, was a Semi Finalist in the Bampton Young Opera Competition and represented the Conservatoire in the Junior Kathleen Ferrier Competition. Whilst studying at the Conservatoire he became a Samling Artist and sang in the Bayreuth FestspielChor for two years. His studies were kindly supported by the Musician’s Beneveloent Fund and the ABRSM Postgraduate Scholarship. He has participated in master-classes with David Syrus, Jon Treleaven, Roderick Williams, Malcolm Martineau and Sir Thomas Allen.
Operatic roles have included Banquo (cover) with Scottish Opera in Verdi's Macbeth. Theseus in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Die Sprecher in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Antinoo in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. He recently appeared in concert with the RSNO performing a variety of operatic scenes.
Recent solo concerts have seen him appearing in Copenhagen with MogensDahl Kammerkor singing George Frideric Handel's Messiah. Other works include the Johannes Brahms' Requiem, Rossini's Petit Messe Sollenelle, Dvorak'’s Stabat Mater, Tippett's A Child of Our Time, Haydn's Creation and Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah.
Dominic Barberi currently works with Opera North; upcoming highlights include a debut role with the company singing the Bass Famigliari in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and the cover of Uncle Salvaor in De Falla's La Vida Breve. He looks forward to joining the Young Artist Programme at the Berlin Staatsoper from 2015 to 2017. Hae currently lives in Berlin, Germany. |
