Elio Battaglia (Baritone)

Born: November 3, 1933 - Palermo, Italy

The Italian baritone, Elio Battaglia, was trained at the school of Iris Adams Corradetti and Erik Werba. He got a diploma for singing at the Conservatorio B. Marcello in Venice and graduated in Lied and Oratorio at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna. He has dedicated his musical life to the concert repertoire, both chamber and symphonic, but above all he has dedicated himself to the art of the Song, and through all this (Opera, Lied, Oratorio), he became renowned all over the world.

Elio Battaglia was the first Italian singer to centralize his activity on the Lieder repertoire; has made numerous broadcast recordings, including less frequently performed composers (Franz, Loewe, Pfitzner), sang Lieder recitals in the best concert centers (Italy, USA, Japan, Soviet Union, etc). In the symphonic-concert field he was, among other, one of the first Italian performers of Arnold Schoenberg's A survivor from Warsaw and Ode to Napoleone Bonaparte. With Erik Werba at the piano, he has recorded an anthology of the German Lied and the first integral edition of the Lieder for male voice of Ferruccio Busoni (CD Warner-Fonit).

Elio Battaglia taught singing for ten years at the Conservatorio G.Verdi in Torino (Turin). He is the founder and director of the course of German Lied at Acquasparta from 1973 until today. In addition, he has given prestigious master-classes and courses in the universities and conservatories around the world, from the USA to former USSR, from China to Japan, Korea to Europe (Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Stuttgart, Hannover, Frankfurt, Brussels). In Italy he has held advanced courses and he has organised seminars of singing in Torino (Teatro Regio, Conservatorio G.Verdi), Siena (Accademia Chigiana), Parma (Festival Verdi), Roma (Università La Sapienza), Tolentino (Teatro Vaccaj), Napoli (Conservatorio S.Pietro a Majella), Catania (Istituto Bellini, Teatro Massimo), Milano (Conservatorio G.Verdi).

Author of numerous exams and critical articles on the vocal art, has cured the didactic edition of the method of Song of Nicholas Vaccaj (Memories) and an Anthology of the German Lied (Curci). He has disclosed the art of Callas Maria, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and of Nicolai Gedda with international conventions, conferences and radio broadcasts all over the world. He hold a teaching post at the Accademia Pescarese from 1984 and the Mozarteum in Salzburg since 1993. In 2003 he gave master-classes at the Academy of the Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, hosted by Marilyn Horne.

For his artistic merits he was given, in 1987, the Medal Hugo Wolf of the Austria.
