Judith Bowers (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: USA

The American mezzo-soprano and voice instructor, Judith (Judy) Bowers, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, Connecticut in May 2008 (summa cum laude); and her Master of Music degree in Early Music, Vocal Performance from the Early Music Institute, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University in Bloomington in May 2012, as a student of Patricia Styles. She is currently pursuing her Doctoral degree in music from the University of Connecticut, as a student of Dr. Constance Rock. During the past two years, she has been selected to participate in many master-classes with international musicians and opera stars. She has performed for baritone Nathan Gun, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, and counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky. Awards and Scholarships include: Graduate Assistantship - University of Connecticut School of Music; Associate Instructorship --Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University; Full Merit Scholarship - Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford;.

Judith Bowers is equally at home in both the opera house and recital hall. She has appeared as a guest artist with Virginia Opera, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, University of Connecticut Opera, Hartford Opera Theater, the Yale Choral Artists, and Mark Morris Dance Company, among others. Recently, she made her Carnegie Hall debut under the baton of William Christie.

Judith Bowers has performed as a concert soloist in such notable works as J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), Mass in B minor (BWV 232), Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244); George Frideric Handel's Dixit Dominus, Judas Maccabaeus and Messiah; Monteverdi's Vespers; Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, and the Maurice Duruflé's Requiem. Recent appearances include her role as Storge, opposite Julianne Baird, in a concert performance of G.Fr. Handel's Jephtha with the Hartt School of Music. She is looking forward to further collaboration with Julianne Baird during their upcoming May performance of Judas Maccabaeus with the New Haven Chorale.

Opera roles include Mrs Noye in Benjamin Britten's Noye’s Fludde; Maman, The Chinese Teacup and the Dragonfly in Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges; Florence Pike in B. Britten's Albert Herring; Jo March in Adamo's Little Women; Rebecca Nurse in Wards's The Crucible; Bianca in B. Britten’s Rape of Lucretia; the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel; Marcellina in W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro; and Third Lady in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

In addition to her work as a soloist, Judith Bowers is a voice instructor. Her teaching experience include: Private Voice Instructor (9-12) at the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut (2008-2009); Private Voice Instructor (6-12) at Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut (2008-2009); Associate Instructor at Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University in Bloomington Iindiana (2009-2012). She currently teaches voice at the University of St Joseph.
