The American bass-baritone, Brandon Cedel, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance (2010) and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance (2013) from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He also studied at the Music Academy of the West, the Chautauqua Institution and The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division. He is a graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He was the Grand Prize Winner at the Gerda Lissner Vocal Competition (2011); the winner at the George London Awards (2012); and Recipient of the Sarah Tucker Grant at the Richard Tucker Foundation (2012); the Grand Finals winner of the Met’s National Council Auditions (2013); a recipient of the Richard Tucker Career Grant (2015); and a recipient of a Sullivan Award. He was also the First Place Winner at the Giulio Gari Foundation Competition, Palm Beach Opera Competition, S. Livingston Mather Competition, and Sue Goetz Ross Memorial Competition. He has also received awards from the Liederkranz Competition, Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation, Loren L. Zachary Competition, Opera Index, and the Mario Lanza Competition.
Brandon Cedel and was an ensemble member of Oper Frankfurt from 2016-2019. His many roles for Oper Frankfurt include Masetto (2017), Sprecher in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Lieutenant Ratcliffe in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd, Argante, Ariodate in Serse, Cesare Angelotti in Tosca, (2018), Brander in La damnation de Faust and Achior in W.A. Mozart’s La Betulia Liberata (2017)
Highlights of Brandon Cedel’s recent seasons include performances at the Metropolitan Opera of the Porter in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk under the baton of James Conlon (2014) and a Flemish Deputy in Sir Nicholas Hytner’s production of Verdi’s Don Carlo under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin (March-April 2022); his UK and company debut as both Masetto and Leporello with the Glyndebourne Festival’s production of Don Giovanni conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada (June-July 2014); his company and role debut as Isacio in G.F. Handel's Riccardo Primo with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis (June 2015); a return to Opera Philadelphia as the title role in Le nozze di Figaro (April May 2017), and his Kennedy Center debut recital with the Vocal Arts Society in Washington, D.C. (December 2013). He made his Metropolitan Opera company debut in their Summer Recital Series (July 2013) and his house debut as a Watchman in R. Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten (2013-2014 seson). Recent orchestral engagements include an appearance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at a concert featuring Leonard Bernstein's Songfest, conducted by David Charles Abell (January 2018), L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Russian National Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski at the Napa Valley Festival del Sole (July 2015), the role of Panthée in a concert performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlioz’s Les Troyens conducted by Charles Dutoit (October 2015), and Robert Schumann's The Pilgrimage of the Rose with Le Festival de Lanaudiere (2018).
Recent appearances include the title role in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (May-July 2022), Bottom in B. Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream (July-August 2023), Leporello W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Argante in George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo for the Glyndebourne Festival; the title role in Hercules for the Karlsruhe Handel Festival and the Komische Oper, Berlin (2024); the title role in Don Giovanni for the Atlanta Opera; Dan Brown in the world premiere of The Hours with the Philadelphia Orchestra/Yannick Nézet-Séguin and subsequently at the Metropolitan Opera(2024); Masetto Don Giovanni for the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Collatinus B. Britten's The Rape of Lucretia and Magnifico La Cenerentola for the Boston Lyric Opera (2023); the title role in Le nozze di Figaro for Opera Philadelphia and the Stuttgart Staatsoper; Goulaud Pelléas et Mélisande for Des Moines Metro Opera and Colline La bohème and Basilio Il barbiere di Siviglia for the Canadian Opera Company.
Highlights in his 2024-2025 season include Dulcamara L’elisir d’amore in his debut for the English National Opera, Il Re in G.F. Handel's Ariodante for Boston Baroque (2025) and Garibaldo in G.F. Handel's Rodelinda in his debut for Garsington Opera. In concert he sings Haydn’s The Creation with Music of the Baroque/Jane Glover (2024), W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Handel & Haydn Society/Jonathan Cohen (2024) and Méphistophélès in Berlioz’ La damnation de Faust with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra/Guillermo Figueroa (2015).
