Mark-Andrew Celeveland (Bass-Baritone)

Born: New Hampshire, USA

The American bass-baritone, Mark-Andrew Cleveland, graduated magna cum laude from Westminster Choir College.

Mark-Andrew Cleveland has performed extensively throughout the Northeast. A versatile performer, his repertoire ranges from chant to contemporary works and oratorio to opera. He has performed frequently in Boston with many distinguished organizations including the Cantata Singers, Boston Baroque, Masterworks Chorale, and the Brookline Chorus. His credits as a soloist include also performances with the Bach Choir of Bethlehem (Pennsylvania), Southwest Symphony (Florida), Boston Cecilia, Back Bay Chorale, Handel Society of Dartmouth, Concord Chorale, Manchester Choral Society, Newburyport Chorale and Worcester Chorus, among others. His symphonic and festival appearances include the Southwest Florida Symphony, Festival of Two Worlds (in Charleston, SC, and Spoleto, Italy), Vermont Symphony, Tanglewood Festival (Ravinia) and the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (California).

In addition to his frequent appearances as an oratorio soloist, Mark-Andrew Cleveland has appeared on the operatic stage in Spoleto, Italy and Charleston, South Carolina with the Festivale dei Due Mondi, the June Opera Festival of New Jersey, Granite State Opera and Monadnock Festival. Acclaimed for his dramatic interpretation, his recent operatic engagements include Prism Opera, Salisbury Opera, the New Jersey June Opera Festival and several Boston University productions.

A respected collaborative musician, Mark-Andrew Cleveland has performed in recitals and chamber music concerts throughout New England. He has given recitals in the Young Artist Series at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston University's Tsai Performance Center, Chromatic Club of Boston, Sarata, and at many area colleges, universities, and music schools. He has appeared with numerous chamber music ensembles, including the Tyaga String Quartet, Arcadia Players, Sarasa. Recently he performed at the Murten Classics Festival in Switzerland, and the Holland Festival Oudemuziek Utrecht in the Netherlands with La Donna Musicale, a Boston based chamber ensemble which specializes in the historically informed performances of women composers from the Baroque era.

Mark-Andrew Cleveland was also the soloist in the premiere of Earl Kim's Scenes from a Movie, Part 3: the 26th dream, and created the role of Tennyson in the premiere of Andy Vore's opera, Freshwater. In addition, he premiered the song cycle Cynthia, a commissioned work written for him by Marilyn Ziffrin. Recent performances include Jesus in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Cantata Singers, L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Chatham Chorale, Haydn's Theresienmesse with the Spectrum Singers, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Concord Chorale; L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with The Nashua Symphony; and in Johannes BrahmsEin Deutches Requiem, with the Keene Chorale..

In addition, he has recorded with New World Records and Telarc in repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the 20th century. Mark-Andrew Cleveland has recorded with Boston Baroque in Glück's Iphigenie en Tauride and participated in the Grammy award winning of Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra and Westminster Choir.

In addition to his frequent solo performances, Mark-Andrew Cleveland maintains an active vocal studio. His students have received top scores in NH All State auditions, been judged competition winners, and represented New Hampshire as winners of the National Music Teachers Association at District and National competitions. His students have matriculated at many prestigious colleges and conservatories including Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory, Ithaca College, New England Conservatory, and Westminster Choir College. He teaches voice at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, Phillips Exeter Academy, St. Paul’s School, and at the Concord Community Music School in Concord. He currently serves also as the Director of Music at Grace Episcopal Church in Manchester, New Hampshire.
