The Portuguese tenor, Gerson Coelho, grew up with a passion for music since early days of childhood, and started his studies at the age of 6 with piano classes. He received Piano degree from Conservatório de Música de Santarém (2000-2007); and obtained his Degree in Music Teaching and Choral Conducting from Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (2010-2013). During his studies, he was was Erasmus Student at Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Keckskemét, Hungary (2011-2012). By then, choral music became his prime passion. He has studied singing with Geert Berghs and currently with Rita Marques.
Gerson Coelho has been involved in intense activity with choirs and ensembles such as Officium Ensemble, Coro Gulbenkian (2012-2025); Casa da Música Choir (2014-2024) , Voces Caelestes and Ricercare; La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall); Amsterdam Baroque Choir (since 2022; Director: Ton Koopman); Choeur de Chambre de Namur (since 2022; Directors: Jean Tubéry/Leonardo García-Alarcón); Vox Luminis (2025; Director: Lionel Meunier). He has Extensively worked with: Michel Corboz, Daniel Reuss, Kaspars Putnin̦š, Tõnu Kaljuste, Sigvards Kļava, Leonardo García-Alarcón, Martina Batič, Florian Helgath, Peter Dijkstra, Risto Joost, Paul Hillier, Lluís Vilamajó, Jordi Savall; and briefly worked with: Ton Koopman, Lionel Meunier.
Gerson Coelho's concert repertoire includes: J.S. Bach's Missa brevis in G minor, BWV 235, Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248, Magnificat in D major BWV 243, Several cantatas; George Frideric Handel's O Praise the Lord, Nisi Dominus, Messiah, Acis and Galatea; F.J. Haydn's Creation; W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass K317, Requiem in D minor; Ralph Vaughan Williams's Songs of Travel; Roger Quilter's Shakespeare Songs; Samuel Barber's 4 Songs for Voice and Piano.
As a vocal coach, Gerson Coelho has worked with Tenso Europe Chamber Choir (2016, 2017); Meesters & Gezellen (2017, 2021); Settimana Musicale del Trecento Arezzo; and Bachcelona Academy (2025). He has also given Vocal Technique workshops with several groups in Portugal, Collaborations with Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Cantoría Music, Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne. |
