The American woodwinds player (oboe, flute), Luke Conklin, obtained his Bachleor ofArts degree in Music in combination with Classical Studies, Oboe emphasis from the Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York (2003-2007); his Master of Arts degree in Chant and Ritual Song with elective studies from the Irish Music Performance Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Limerick, Ireland (2007-2008); his Master of Music degree in Historical Performance Practice, Historical Oboe emphasis from The Juilliard School in New York City, New York (2009-2011), where he was also a member of the first class of historical performance students; and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Historical Performance, Historical Oboe emphasis from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (2012-2020). His principal teachers include Paige Morgan, Gonzalo Ruiz, Debra Nagy, Kathie Stewart and Sandra Miller.
Luke Conklin has performed with Houston Bach Society (2017-2018), Apollo's Fire (2012-2020; Director: Jeannette Sorrell, New York Baroque Incorporated (2016-2018), The Henry Purcell Society (2018), Michigan Bach Collective (2017-2018), Juilliard415 (2010-2012, 2018), Madison Bach Musicians (2011-2017), Portland Baroque Orchestra (2016, 2020), The Washington National Cathedral (2015), The American Bach Soloists (2012, Director: Jeffrey Thomas), Trinity Wall Street Baroque Orchestra (2010-2012), Juilliard Baroque (2010), SUNY Fredonia Orchestras (2008-2009), Ithaca College Orchestra (2006-2007), Cirque Du Soleil's Drawn to Life and many others.
A frequent collaborator with Cleveland-based Apollo's Fire Baroque Orchestra, he appears on their recent albums "O, Jerusalem!" and "Christmas from Sugarloaf Mountain", playing oboe, recorder, Celtic and Medieval harps, Irish flute, and shawm. He has recently taken over as Artistic Director of Kalamazoo-based Early Music Michigan.
In addition to his work as a performer, Luke Conklin is an active music educator teaching private lessons on modern and historical woodwinds as well as serving as the co-director of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Preparatory Winds. His teaching experience: Signature Band and Choir Camp in Ithaca, New York (2004-2005: Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone); Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (2015-2016: Music Electives, Recorder); French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, New York (2022: Woodwinds)Marshall Music Company in Portage, Michigan (2019-2023: Oboe, Saxophone, Flute). His major research interest is the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau, and he also performs on a variety of folk and early flutes as well as the Medieval Harp. He currently lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. |
