The Brazilian-American counter-tenor (former tenor) and voice coach, Matheus Luduwig Coura, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from University of North Florida (2011-2015); Master of Fine Arts in Voice and Opera of Music (2017-2019) and his Professional Studies Diploma in Historically Informed Performance Practice - Baroque from San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2019-2020). During his studies, he was Tenor Choral Scholar at Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, Florida (August 2012-September 2014); Tenor Section Leader at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Florida (2014-2017); Alto Choirman at Grace Cathedral Choir in · San Francisco, California (January 2018-November 2019); Voice teacher at San Francisco Boys Chorus (July 2018-September 2019).
Matheus Coura is quickly gaining attention as a passionate performer of Baroque and Modern repertoire. For the 2018-2019 season, Coura “rose above all factors…with confident execution” (The rehearsal studio) as countertenor soloist in the premiere of Yuri Possokhov’s “...two united in a single soul…” with the San Francisco Ballet; praised for his “terrific singing” (San Francisco Classical Voice) as a “passionate Teucro who sang with strong soprano tones.” (Operawire) in the critically acclaimed revival of Giovanni Porta’s Ifigenia in Aulide with Ars Minerva (October 2018), Andronico in George Frideric Handel's Tamerlano with SFCM Baroque, Alto Soloist in excerpts of Edward Elgar's Sea Pictures with Palms Presbyterian Orchestra, and educational outreach performances with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (May 2018). 2018 marked Coura’s operatic debut in the counter-tenor repertoire as Bertarido in G.F. Handel's Rodelinda with SFCM Baroque Orchestra. Recent oratorio appearances include alto soloist in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 and Matthias Weckmann's Weine nicht with the American Bach Soloists Academy (July 2018), and Israeltish Man in G.F. Handel's Judas Maccabaeus with Victoria Conservatory Baroque. For the 2019-2020 season, Coura performed as Alto Soloist in G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Reading Choral Society, the title Role in G.F. Handel's Ottone with SFCM Baroque, Giuliano in Cavalli’s Eliogabalo with the West Edge Opera Festival and as an alto in the American Bach Choir. He currently lives in San Francisco, California. |
