Stéphane Degout (Baritone)

Born: June 9, 1975 - Bourg-en-Bresse, France

The internationally-acclaimed French baritone, Stéphane Degout, graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon and then became a member of the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Lyon. In 1998 he won the 1998: Fifth prize at Les Voix nouvelles Competition of France Télécom; in 2002, Second prize at the Placido Domingo Competition / Operalia; in 2006, Prix Gabriel Dussurget at festival d'Aix en Provence.

Stéphane Degout gained international attention in his debut as Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Festival d'Aix. Since then, he has appeared on the major operatic stages, namely the Opera de Paris, the Berlin Staatsoper, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, the Theater an der Wien, the Royal Opera House in London, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro all Scala, and the Bayerische Staatsoper. He has also performed at the Salzburg, Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence and Chorégies d’Oranges festivals. The roles he has recently performed include Oreste in Iphigénie en Tauride, Wolfram in Tannhaüser, Raimbaud in Comte Ory, Thésée in Hippolyte & Aricie, Dandini in Cenerentola, Mercutio, Pelléas in Pelléas & Mélisande, Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and the title roles in Thomas’ Hamlet and Monteverdi’s Orfeo.

Equally renowned as a recitalist and concert singer, Stéphane Degout performs with great pleasure French melody and Lieder and has made many International recital tours, including appearances in Amsterdam, Paris, London, Berlin, Brussels or New York. Recent concert highlights include performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Riccardo Muti and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Stéphane Degout starts the 2016-2017 season at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam with Les Nozze di Figaro and then returns to La Monnaie for Chausson/Fauré concerts under Alain Altinoglu and to the Aix-en-Provence Festival for a creation. In addition to a recital tour in Europe, this active concert artist will sing under the baton of under René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, John Nelson and Raphaël Pichon.

Mr. Degout has recorded Werther, Così fan tutte, Pelléas et Mélisande, Le Comte Ory (Metropolitan Opera), Hippolyte & Aricie, Les Boréades in DVD format. He has recorded Johannes BrahmsDeutsches Requiem (piano version), Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Mélodies, dedicated to the French repertoire for Naïve as well as La Bohème for Deutsche Grammophon.

Stéphane Degout was appointed ‘Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ in September 2012; a prestigious award which recognises ‘significant contribution to the enrichment of French cultural inheritance’. He was also awarded the prize ‘Lyrical Artist of the Year’ at the Victoires de la Musique Classique 2012. In addition, he was named Beste männliche Hauptrolle in June 2013 at the Musiktheaterpreises for his title-role in Hamlet.
