The Belgian mezzo-soprano, Lucienne-Delvaux, studied in her home town, and then made her debut at the Opera House in Gent n 1947 in the part of Guduul in Jan Blockx' opera De Bruid der Zee (The Bride of the Sea). From Gent, she went to the opera of Antwerp and then became a member of the Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels from 1953 to 1955. During the 1955-1956 season, she was engaged by the Paris Grand Opéra where she sang Amneris, Dalila, Albine, Bellone and Ortrud. Thereafter she appeared regularly at the Opera House in Gent, but made numerous guest appearances in the major French provincial theatres, namely Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, and Nantes. These activities continued until the beginning of the 1970's.
Lucienne-Delvaux's roles included Leonora in Donizetti's La Favorite, Azucena, Herodias in R. Strauss' Salome, Brangäne, Fricka in Die Walküre, Cassandra in Les Troyens, the Queen in A. Thomas' Hamlet, the Innkeeper in Boris Godunov, Madame de Croissy in Francis Poulenc's first performance in Belgium of Les dialogues des Carmelites (1959), the Mother-in-Law in Fortner's Bluthochzeit and the Queen in Ferenc Erkel's Bank Ban, the latter in the Belgian Premiere at the Opera House in Gent. In addition, she was a successful concert and oratorio singer and made guest appearances in Holland, Austria and North Africa.
Recordings: EJS the Queen in the complete recording of Hamlet. Lucienne-Delvaux rarely entered the recording studio. In 2008 Musique en Wallonie released 2-CD album with tracks taken from some of her numerous radio broadcasts. |
