Jörg Deutschewitz (Tenor)

Born: Dcember 4, 1964 - Germany
Died: Beginning of January 2026 - Heidelberg, Germany

The German tenor, Jörg Deutschewitz, studied voice, music education, musicology and philosophy in Karlsruhe.

Jörg Deutschewitz' musical focus was on early music (Renaissance / Early Baroque) and contemporary vocal music in various ensembles. He was a member of the ensemble Peñalosa, Hofkapelle Karlsruhe (Director: Michael Procter), Officium (Director: Wilfried Rombach), Ordo Virtutum (Director: Dr. Stefan Morent), Schola Heidelberg (Director: Walter Nussbaum), ChorWerk Ruhr (since July 2012; Director: Florian Helgath), Basler Madrigalisten (Director: Fritz Näf), and Gaechinger Cantorey (Director: Hans-Christoph Rademann). He worked with conductors such as Ingo Metzmacher, Paul McCreesh, Thomas Hengelbrock, Wolfgang Schäfer and others, as well as with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Hans Zender, Johannes Kalitzke, Tan Dun and others. Numerous CD, radio and TV recordings prove his wide-ranging repertoire, which ranges from Gregorian chant to jazz..

Jörg Deutschewitz has been an indispensable part of the Schola Heidelberg's work over the past three decades. His vocal and musical assurance, along with his gentle authority, were always essential components of rehearsals and the resulting performances. Everyone who had the privilege of working with him benefited from his experience as a tenor in diverse ensembles, in choirs and groups beyond the KlangForum, and from his comprehensive familiarity with the repertoire and styles of vocal music from all eras. He also consistently demonstrated collegial patience in training younger singers.

Jörg Deutschewitz' rich musical background was always evident in our collaborations. Behind an outward appearance of modesty lay an inimitable, often spontaneously pointed sense of humor in rehearsal situations, a genuine love of discussion, but also stubbornness where interpretative or even theatrical demands were too far removed from his familiar convictions. His courage and musical intelligence, even in taking on extroverted roles, are exemplified in the great tenor solo from Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf's Astronomica (2022) (1), while his ear for sound and stylistic assurance as a Renaissance tenor are also evident, for example, in the recording of Gesualdo's madrigal O dolorosa gioia (2023). What remains in memory is his knowledgeable loyalty as a vocalist in numerous recordings and countless concerts, as a colleague and friend. As a musician.

Jörg Deutschewitz lived in Walzbachtal, Baden-Württemberg. KlangForum Heidelberg informed in February 2016, that Jörg Deutschewitz died unexpectedly in January 2026, at the age of 61 (exact day is not known, because he was found about four weeks later…).
