Norman Foster (Bass)

The American bass, Norman Foster, began his musical career as a concert violinist. However, he studied voice on the side and did so well that he won a competition at the Boston Conservatory and a scholarship for perfecting his vocal techinque.He also studied lieder-singing under Felix Wolfes at this time.

After the completion of his studies, Norman Foster was engaged by Boris Goldovsky to sing in his Opera Theater in New England where for five years he sang first baritone roles. He toured throughout the USA as well, appearing in lieder recitals and as soloist with symphony orchestras. In 1950 he appeared in televised opera performances in Boston. In order to further extend his operatic repertoire, he went to Europe in l951 and was coached by Signor Granforte in Milan. From there he continued on to Vienna where he gave a series of concerts and then toured Austria and Germany. In l953 he sang in modern and classical operas at the Passau Musical Festival.
