The American mezzo-soprano, Joanna Nelson Gates, is an accomplished solo and ensemble singer and teacher who performs a wide range of vocal repertoire. She has been praised for her “dazzling, florid technique and eloquent phrasing” on the operatic stage and in the concert hall.
In concert Joanna Gates has been a mezzo-soprano soloist in the Verdi's Requiem, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Messiah, W.A. Mozart's Mass in C minor, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah and has performed in recitals and chamber ensembles throughout the region. She is a core member of The Crossing, the three time Grammy award-winning vocal ensemble, fully dedicated to the performance of new music and has recorded over 25 albums with the ensemble. She can also be seen performing in the Philadelphia area with Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Box, The Mastersingers of Wilmington, and The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill.
Joanna Gates now lives in Wilmington, Delaware and teaches voice and violin lessons at Sanford School. At Sanford, she also works as a guest teacher in the music department and as a costume designer for the school’s theatrical performances. |
