The Belgian counter-tenor, Patrick Van Goethem, was educated at the famous boys choir Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino under direction of Michaël Ghijs. He studied with Marie-Thérèse Maesen and Zeger Vandersteene. After being educated in the baroque field by Paul Esswood, Julia Hamari and Andreas Scholl, he is now a frequently asked for concert singer, working as soloist with many distinguished conductors in the early music field. After a while he began to sing professionally in ensembles as Capilla Flamenca, Ricercar Consort, Akademia, Ex Tempore, La Fenice and La Sfera Armoniosa.
With Peter Neumann (Collegium Cartusianum) Patrick Van Goethem sang in George Frideric Handel’s Saul during the Göttinger Händelfestspiele and in the Philharmonie Köln. With Peter Neumann he also recorded G.F. Handel’s Belshazzar (singing the role of Daniel). With the Nederlandse Bachvereniging he sang J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) conducted by Gustav Leonhardt at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He further worked as soloist with Hans-Christoph Rademann (Dresdner Hofmusik) during the Alte Musik Festival Dresden and with whom he recorded CD’s with work from Johann David Heinichen and Jan Dismas Zelenka and G.F. Handel’s Dixit Dominus. With Hans-Christoph Rademann he met with great success in a Herkules-programme (J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel) in Dresden and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. He has also worked with Roland Wilson (Musica Fiata Köln). With Marcel Ponseele (Il Gardellino) he sang the Herkules-programme in France during the Festival de Përigueux. With Reinhard Goebel (Musica Antiqua Köln) he sang in a J.S. Bach cantata-project during the Festival Musica Antiqua Bruges and in G.P. Telemann’s Der Messias in the Festival De La Chaise-Dieu (France) (also broadcasted on radio).
With the Leipziger Barockorchester Patrick Van Goethem sang J.S. Bach’s St. Matthews Passion (BWV 244) in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig as part of the Bach Year 2000, with Helmuth Rilling's Bach Collegium Stuttgart he performed during the Bachwoche Stuttgart, with Edward Higginbottom (New College Choir Oxford) he sang the Messiah in Poznan (Poland), with Hermann Max (Das Kleine Konzert) he sang cantatas by G.P. Telemann during the Festlicher Tage Alter Musik Knechtsteden. In a co-production of Collegium Vocale Gent and the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend, he sang successfully in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. With Jürgen Budday he sang Cyrus in G.F. Handel’s Belshazzar during the Maulbronner Schlosskonzerte.
Patrick Van Goethem has also sang with Jos van Veldhoven (Utrechts Barok Consort), Martin Gester (Le Parlement de Musique), Rudolf Werthen (I Fiamminghi), Patrick Peire (Collegium Instrumentale Brugense), Florian Heyerick (Ex Tempore) with whom he recorded G.F. Handel’s St. Johns Passion and the Mariavespers of Monteverdi and Dirk Vermeulen (Prima La Musica).In addition he sang with Richard Egarr (Concerto d’Amsterdam) in G.F. Handel’s Messiah, with Pierre Cao (Concerto Köln) he concluded a French tour with a G.P. Telemann, C. Graupner and J.S. Bach-programme, with Ebbe Munk (Concerto Copenhagen) he performed J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) and St. Matthews Passion (BWV 244). In 2004 he recorded J.S. Bach’s Himmelfahrts- (BWV 11) and Oster-Oratorium (BWV 249) on the BIS-label with the Bach Collegium Japan conducted by Masaaki Suzuki with concerts in Tokyo and Kobe.
Further engagements included a concert with Frieder Bernius (Barockorchester Stuttgart) during the Göttinger Händelfestspielen, concerts in the prestigeous Bachwoche Ansbach 2005, with the Ensemble De Profundis (conductor Peter Kooy). In 2005 he made his American debut with The Columbus Bach Ensemble conducted by Christine Shumway Mortine in a programme built around the music of J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel. In April 2005 he sang J.S. Bach’s Oster-Oratorium (BWV 249) and Magnificat (BWV 243) with the American Bach Soloists conducted by Jeffrey Thomas followed by J.S. Bach's B-minor mass (BWV 232) with the Washington Bach Consort (J. Reilly Lewis). In 2006 Patrick Van Goethem recorded the D. Buxtehude Cantatas on CD with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra followed by a large European concert tour in 2007. In March 2007 Patrick Van Goethem will sing the alto arias in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245)during a large European concert-tour with the Orchestra of the 18th Century, conducted by Frans Brüggen.
Furthermore Patrick Van Goethem was guest in all important festivals and concert-halls, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussels, Festival of Flanders, Festival de Wallonie, Musica Flandrica, Early Music Festival Utrecht, Mozart Festival Lille, Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, Festival di Cremona, Festliche Tage Alter Musik Knechtsteden, Händelfestspiele Halle, Bachfest Leipzig, Alte Musik Festival Dresden, Händelfestspiele Göttingen, London Bach Festival, and Festival de Vézelay.
Though indeed filled with enthousiasm for Baroque music, in the context of his quite extensive repertoire, Patrick Van Goethem does not hesitate to also sing more contemporary music. He regularly sings works by Benjamin Britten and Arvo Pärt. With Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana he toured very successfully through Germany with concerts in the Philharmonie in München and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, conducted by Christian Kabitz. In March 2007 he will sing in the chamberopera Trans-Warhol, about the life of Andy Warhol, from the french composer Philippe Schoeller, a worldpremiere in the BFM in Geneva.
In addition to his career as a concert-singer, Patrick Van Goethem regularly performs with his ensemble The Flanders Baroque Consort whereby he is accompanied by harpsichord, viola da gamba and lute. With the ensemble he performed amongst others at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and during the Händelfestspiele in Halle. He is founder of the J.S. Bach Cantata Cycle Aalst, in which he performs with this ensemble, which gave its first concert season at Aalst (Belgium) in 2006. |
