The Capella Agostino Steffani (now Hannoversche Hofkapelle) is a German Baroque music orchestra on early instruments, founded in 1981 in Hannover by the Hungarian harpsichordist and organist Lajos Rovátkay. The ensemble owes its name to Agostino Steffani, kapellmeister around 1690 for the opera at the court of Duke Ernest-Auguste, Prince-Elector of Hanover, who was authoritative for late Baroque music in Germany.
After the resignation of Lajos Rovátkay in 1996, the ensemble was renamed Hannoversche Hofkapelle and its management was taken over by Anne Röhrig, first violin and founding member of Capella Agostino Steffani.
When it was founded, the primary objective of the Capella Agostino Steffani ensemble was to revive, through performances based on original sources, compositions from the 18th and 18th centuries that had fallen into oblivion, in particular those of the Italian masters. and their spheres of influence in Europe.

The Hannoversche Hofkapelle (= HHK, Hanoverian Court Orchestra), located in Hannover (Germany), remains totally faithful to the tradition of historic court orchestras and performs both chamber music and symphonies. The sound of this ensemble is hallmarked by the fact that the musicians also have experience of playing with different music ensembles on the European Baroque scene and view historical performance practices (see also: Historically informed performance) as a means of keeping current.
The repertoire of the HHK is not restricted to the many forms of Baroque music alone, but also includes classical works, with Mozart operas and the Romantic era being particularly favoured. Their constant involvement with 17th and 18th-century music has made the Court Orchestra musicians masters of their respective instruments. The result is the expressive and elegant style of playing that assures the orchestra its prominent position. The Hanoverian Court Orchestra has been the "orchestra in residence" at the Herrenhausen Festival Weeks since 2006. |
