Jonathan Hanley (Tenor)

Born: June 4, 1993 - Ipswich, Suffolk, England

The English tenor, Jonathan Hanley, was a chorister and choral scholar at St Mary-le-Tower, Ipswich under the direction of Dr Michael Nicholas, before reading History at the University of York (October 2011-June 2014), where he was a choral scholar at York Minster (September 2013-June 2015). During his time at university, he also performed with a number of ensembles including the Yorkshire Bach Choir and the Ebor Singers. After graduating, he spent three years as a Lay Clerk at Peterborough Cathedral under the direction of Steven Grahl (September 2015-September 2018) and has been a member of Genesis Sixteen, The Sixteen's young artists' scheme (2016-2017). He is now a freelance singer and a member of the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico. He currently studies with tenor, Richard Edgar-Wilson. He was also a Monteverdi Choir Apprentice for 2018-2019 and has gone on to work regularly for the group.

Jonathan Hanley is working as a soloist and ensemble singer with a particular interest in Baroque vocal music. He has performed as a soloist in the UK and Europe, including at the Trame Sonore Chamber Music Festival in Mantua, the York Early Music Festival, the Anghiari Festival, and the Malcolm Arnold Festival. He has appeared as a soloist with the Academy of Ancient Music, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Nevill Holt Opera, Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and the Instruments of Time and Truth. He has recently performed J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) (arias and Evangelist), Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248), St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, and Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas. In 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic, he was to appear as a soloist for Orff's Carmina Burana in 2020 at Snape Maltings, and music by Percy Grainger at the Munich Philharmonie. Jonathan has appeared in a contemporary opera performance and recording of Margaret Catchpole - Two Worlds Apart by Stephen Dodgson at Snape Maltings. He also enjoys performing English song and lieder, most recently performing Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin, L.v. Beethoven's An die Ferne Geliebte, and Robert Schumann's Liederkreis (op. 24 & op. 39) with pianist Nicky Losseff.

As an ensemble singer, Jonathan Hanley works regularly with some of the finest vocal ensembles in the UK, most notably Stile Antico, of which he is a member, the Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), Sansara, Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), The Sixteen (Director: Harry Christophers), Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and the Oxford Consort of Voices. He has toured with the Monteverdi Choir in performances of L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, music by Carissimi, Monteverdi, Scarlatti and Purcell and staged productions of George Frideric Handel's Semele and Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini. He has also recorded discs with Stile Antico, Monteverdi Choir, Sansara, The Sixteen, the Oxford Consort of Voices, the Ebor Singers, and the choirs of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, York Minster, and Peterborough Cathedral. In 2021, he will tour J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) and music by Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn with the Monteverdi Choir & Sir John Eliot Gardiner alongside a busy schedule with vocal ensemble Stile Antico. He currently lives in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
