Jörg Hempel (Baritone)

Born: 1969 - Dresden, Saxony, Germany

The German baritone, Jörg Hempel, entered the renowned Dresdner Kreuzchor when only 10 years old. During the following years, he continued his vocal studies with well-known teachers and coaches in Germany and Italy. He won first prize at the Antonin Dvorak International Competition in the Czech Republic when he was only 22 years old. In 1996, he made his London debut participating in the Young-Songmakers Public Concert directed by Graham Johnson. He has participated in master-classes with many famous artists such as Theo Adam, Brigitte Fassbaender, Irwin Gage, Graham Johnson, Thomas Quasthoff, Peter Schreier, and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf

Jörg Hempel apperars often in recital throughout Germany and Italy in addition to his appearances as soloist in choral performances with conductors such as Nicholas McGegan and Helmuth Rilling. He has appeared with orchestras in Austria, Israel, Denmark, France, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland; and has been engaged at several European opera houses. He made his North American debut with Houston Symphony Orchestra in November 1999, in a performance of J.S. Bach's B minor Mass (BWV 232), conducted by Peter Schreier; followed by performances of St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in San Francisco and Chicago.

Jörg Hempel is a singing teacher at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden. Among his pupils: Karl Hänsel (Tenor), Raphael Hering (Baritone), Bojan Heyn (Bass), Clara-Sophie Rohleder (Soprano), Felix Rohleder (Bass-Baritone), Ilya Silchuk (Baritone), Gerry Zimmermann (Baritone).
