The first engagement of the Austrian contralto, Dagmar Hermann, was in 1943 at the Opera House of Brünn. In 1946 she was engaged by the Vienna State Opera, at which she remained for many years. Although she sang frequently smaller parts, she also appeared as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, as Venus in Tannhäuser and as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. She often participated in the Salzburg Festival, in which she sang in 1950 in The Rape OF Lucretia by Benjamin Britten, in August 1948 in the premiere of Le vin herbé by F. Martin, in 1949 as Annina in Rosenkavalier, in 1950 in Romeo and Julia by Boris Blacher, in 1953-1954 as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte. She made a name for herself by her international appearances. Already in 1947 she made gust appearance in Holland as Annina in Rosenkavalier. In 1950 she participated in the performances of Der Ring des Nibelungen under Wilhelm Furtwängler at Milan’s La Scala, and in 1952 she appeared at the Teatro Bellini of Catania. Further guest appearances were at the Grand Opéra Paris, at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona, at the opera of Bordeaux and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. Apart from her engagement at the Vienna State Opera, she sang also at the Vienna Volksoper.
Dagmar Hermann, who was married temporarily with the bass-baritone of the Vienna Opera Hans Braun (born 1917), had an important career as concert soloist, particularly in oratorios.
Recordings: on Columbia she sang in the final two acts of Rosenkavalier with Ludwig Weber as Ochs; on Philips smaller parts in the complete recording of Salome and Isabella in Boccaccio; on MMS, Vox and smaller labels she interpreted solo parts in oratorios and sacred music works (Stabat Mater by Rossini, f-moll Messe by A. Bruckner); also on Discocorp (parts in Der Ring des Nibelungen, performances in La Scala in 1950 under Wilhelm Furtwängler). |
