Guus Hoekman (Bass)

Born: 1913 - the Netherlands
Died: 1996

The Dutch bass, Guus Hoekman, began his career as a concert singer. His opera debut took place in 1952 at Antwerp, Belgium. He appeared numerous times at the Netherlands Opera in roles such as Don Pasquale, Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Philip II in Don Carlos, Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande and as late as 1984 as Titurel in Parsifal. He took part in the premieres of Kalchas (1959, J. Andriessen) and Jean Lévecq (1965, G. Landré). He appeared also at Salzburg and at Glyndebourne Festivals and sang for more than seven years in the USA. He was also a performer of lieder and sang in oratorio. Among his pupils and/or singers who attended his master-classes:, Palle Fuhr Jørgensen (Baritone).
