The English tenor, Benedict Hymas, graduated from King's College, London, in 2008, with a degree in music.
Since graduating, Benedict Hymas has pursued a busy career as a tenor and haute-contre, working with with many of the UK’s finest vocal ensembles as well as groups in Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA, including the Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh), The Tallis Scholars (Director: Peter Phillips), Polyphony (Director: Stephen Layton), Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short) and London Voices (Director: Terry Edwards). In addition to this, he has been a member of 12-voice ensemble Stile Antico, recording 7 albums, one of which won a Gramophone Award in 2012.
Alongside his ensemble work, Benedict Hymas has also appeared as a soloist for conductors Eric Whitacre, Paul McCreesh and Stephen Layton. As a soloist he is in demand as the Evangelist in J.S. Bach’s Passions, but has also performed works such as Purcell’s Fairy Queen, Benjamin Britten's Serenade and Arvo Pärt's Passio. He is also passionate about the piano, and his Debussy medleys during Stile Antico breaks have been known to empty some of the world’s greatest concert halls.
Benedict Hymas joined acapella choir The King's Singers from September 2014, taking over from Paul Phoenix who has been with the group for almost 17 years. Phoenix announced his retirement from the group in January. Hymas's first performance with the group was a charity concert on Septeember 25, 2014 in the Parish Church of St. Dunstan's, Mayfield, England, before touring across Europe and the USA. Prior to Christmas, he found himself performing in several of the world's most beautiful venues, including Dresden Frauenkirche, Washington National Cathedral and the Budapest Palace of Arts. |
