The Korean soprano, Sunhae Im, studied from 1994 to 1998 at the College of Music/Seoul National University and with Roland Hermann at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe. In 1997 she won First Prize at the Korean Schubert Society Competition and the Grand Prix of the tenth Korean Youth and Music Competition. In May 2000 she was finalist in the Reine Elisabeth Song Competition in Brussels.
In February 2000 Sunhae Im was heard as Barbarina in W.A. Mozart's Nozze di Figaro under Paolo Carigniani at the Frankfurt Opera. In the following season she sang Valetto and Amor in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea (Frankfurt). From 2001 - 2004 she was a member of the Hannover Opera and was heard in roles such as Zerlina, Blondchen/Entführung aus dem Serial, Barbarina/Nozze, Papagena/Zauberflöte, Adele/Fledermaus, Cupido/Orpheus by Offenbach and Yniold in Pelleas et Mélisande.
Sunhae Im has sung many oratorios; among others with Wolfgang Gönnenwein Brahms Requiem in Ludwigsburg and on tour, J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and W.A. Mozart's c-minor mass in Salzburg, W.A. Mozart's concert arias with Philippe Herreweghe, W.A. Mozart's c-minor Mass with Frans Brüggen in Ferrara, Florence and Lucca. With Marcus Creed and the RIAS Kammerchor she sang J.S. Bach in Ambronay and Forbach and was invited to sing J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Christopher Hogwood in Berlin and with Riccardo Chailly in Milan. Herbert Blomstedt invited her for concerts with the Dresden Staatskapelle and with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
In February 2002 Sunhae Im sang with Kent Nagano in Monteverdi's Cobattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda in Berlin as well as J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Freiburg. In Rouen she sang Exsultate, jubilate and J.S. Bach's cantata BWV 51, with the Freiburger Barockorchester she performed arias of the "Mannheimer-Schule". At the Brühler Schloss-Konzerte she sang The Creation and in George Frideric Handel's Siroe. With William Christie she sang a much acclaimed tour in 2002 with Haydn's The Seasons which brought her to the Festivals of Beaune and Aix-en-Provence, to Paris, Caen and Strasbourg as well as to Istanbul, again on tour with William Christie, this time with G.F. Handel’s Messiah in 2003 and in 2004 with two Operas by Charpentier which brought her also to USA. Andreas Spering invited her to record Esterhazy cantatas by Haydn for Harmonia Mundi France (cooperation with WDR, Cologne), Laodice in G.F. Handel's Siroe and The Creation by Haydn.
Sunhae Im’s future engagements include: Adele in Hamburg, concerts with Andrea Marcon at the Kloster Eberbach, Yniold in Berlin and at the Edinburgh Festival, G.F. Handel's Silla with Fabio Biondi in Rome, Les Paladins by Rameau in Basel, St. John Passion (BWV 245) in Munich, Paris and Cologne, Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck in Paris (Palais Garnier), B minor Mass (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach in Hamburg, Valetto/Amore in Poppea by Monteverdi with René Jacobs in Berlin and Brussels. |
