Assaf Kacholi (Tenor)

Born: Israel

The Israeli tenor, Assaf Kacholi, studied Singing and Performing Arts (B.Mus.) at the Rubin Music Academy in Tel Aviv and was trained by Professor Agnes Massini. He has been living in Berlin since October 2002, where he worked with Professor Scot Weir (Hanns-Eisler-Musikhochschule) and Kumiko Okabo-Bohrmann and the pianist Scott Curry (University of Arts of Berlin). During his studies Assaf Kacholi took part in various master-classes, including Diane Forlano, Alyson Pears in London, and Professor Eva Blachova in Vienna. He completed a workshop of the Israeli Vocal Arts Institute Tel Aviv for young singers, arranged by Joan Dornemann (Metropolitan Opera New York). During 2004-2005 he has been supported by the Israeli-German Forum organized by Gerd and Rosamarie Braun.

In 2001 Assaf Kacholi made his début in Israel with concerts at the Tel Aviv Festival, singing the leading part in M. Zormann’s opera Tavern of Spirits, and the Heinrich-Heine-Festival in Jerusalem, giving a recital of Robert Schumanns Dichterliebe. He also sang Tamino in W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute with the Israeli Radio Broadcast Symphony Orchestra in Jerusalem and Kurt Weill’s Seven deadly sins with the Tel Aviv Chamber Orchestra in Tel Aviv.

In 2003 he performed in the world premiere of Georg Philipp Telemann’s opera Pastorelle en musique at Komische Oper Berlin (Meistersaal) and at the Telemann-Festtage in Magdeburg/Germany and appeared in W.A. Mozart’s Così fan tutte at Neuköllner Oper Berlin, which was also performed as a guest production during the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) in June 2004.

In 2004 Assaf Kacholi sang George Frideric Handel's Samson in the Dormizion abby in Jerusalem (conductor Ron Zarchi). In 2005 he took over the role of Petrus in a staged production of G.F. Handel's Brockes Passion, HWV 48 (conductor Barbara Rucha, Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester) which was performed on the Berlin Philharmonie stage and took part at the Frankfurt Oder Musik Festival. In 2004 he had sung the role of Samuel in the modern opera Three sisters who are not sisters (Ned Rorem) which took place at the Komische Oper Berlin (musical direction Scott Curry).

In addition his operatic repertoire includes: W. A. Mozart’s Belmonte,Tamino, Arbace, Impressario, Don Basilio; G. Puccini’s: Prinier in La Rondine, Edmondo in Manon Lescaut; P. Tschaikovsky’s Almeric in Jolanta; Kurt Weill’s Family in Seven deadly sins, Sam Kaplan in Street scene; Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, Toni West Side Story; F. Lehár’s Camille de Rosillon in The Merry Widow. His oratorio repertoire includes: G.F. Handel’s: Messiah, Saul (Jonathan), Samson, Petrus in Brockes Passion, HWV 48; J. Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Die Schöpfung (Uriel), Salve Regina (Solo Tenor); J.S. Bach’s Messe in h-moll (BWV 232), Cantatas BWV 31, BWV 140, BWV 198; Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

In addition Assaf Kacholi has a marked preference for German Lieder and English art songs, which he presents in recitals in Germany and Israel. He sings R. Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe, various songs; E.Grieg’s Op.48 , various songs; L.v. Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, various songs; F. Schubert’s Winterreise, various Lieder; Benjamin Britten’s Still falls the rain, On this island; folksongs arrangements; Johannes BrahmsLiebeslieder Walzer; P. Tosti’s Various italian songs.
