Archie Kliewer (Tenor)

Died: January 4, 2013.- Nashville, Tennessee, USA

The American tenor and music pedagogue, Peter Archie Kliewer, was born into a Mennonite family and devoted his life to Christian ministry as a teenager. He met his wife Agnes when they were both students at Tabor College in the Mennonite community of Hillsboro, Kansas. Archie sang in the Tabor College Men’s Quartet and Agnes sang in the Tabor College Lady’s Quartet. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of Kansas, Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of Wichita and completed all the course requirements for his DMA in vocal performance at the University of Illinois.

Archie Kliewer was assistant professor at Tabor College and produced the Tabor College Chapel Hour, heard in most Mennonite Brethren homes during the 1950’s. He served as Assistant Professor and chair of the voice department at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) in Louisville, Kentucky from 1961 to 1966. He inspired and encouraged many by his singing and his rich tenor voice. In the past, he was very famous in the Mennonite community and made significant contributions to the musical heritage of Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. He also has trained others for the music ministry at the SBTS and at Belmont University in Nashville. He has led the music ministry in various churches. He was a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. While at SBTS, he was a tenor soloist with the Louisville Orchestra and performed with the Kentucky Opera Association. He was featured soloist also with the Illinois University Symphony Orchestra.

Archie Kliewer died on January 4, 2013 at the age of 90. He is survived by four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A digital library of his music can be found on his website, archietenor.org (see link below),
