Johanna Knauth (Soprano)

Born: Dresden, Saxony, Germany

The German soprano, Johanna Knauth, studied singing with Beatrice Niehoff at the Universität der Künste Berlin and with Jeanette Favaro-Reuter at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy" in Leipzig. Currently she is vocally coached by Margreet Honey in Amsterdam and by Beatrice Niehoff. She recevied important musical and performing impulses during her studies, especially in the Lied classes of Eric Schneider, Alexander Schmalcz and Axel Bauni as well as Frank Hilbrich and Philipp Kochheim. In addition to her trainning, she attended master-classes with Margreet Honig, Klesie Kelly, Sibylla Rubens, Christiane Oelze, Valérie Guillorit, Roman Trekel and Manfred Jung, among other, as well as interpretation courses with Helmuth Rilling (Stuttgarter Bachakademie), Regina Werner-Dietrich, Berthold Schmied, Zvi Semel and Philipp Moll. Johanna Knauth has received many awards. She laureate of the the Internationalen Wettbewerbs für Kirchenmusik "cantateBach!" 2011, as well as International Giulio Perotti Competition 2013, where she also won the "special prize for the most beautiful Soprano voice". She is also the winner of the Gebruder-GraunPreis in the category solo 2013, and the Singing Competition of "Walter und Charlotte Hamel Stiftung Hannover" 2014. In 2017 she won the 1st prize of the Podiums Junger Konzertsolisten des VDKC and became the Telemann Prize Winner of of the 9th Internationalen TelemannWettbewerbs. She was a scholarship holder of Internationalen Wettbewerbs für Kirchenmusik "cantateBach!", the Jungen Musiker Stiftung Bayreuth Opernakademie "Oper.Oder.Spree".

Already during her studies, Johanna Knauth was able to win numerous engagements increasingly making a name as a concert soloist, with preliminary emphasis on the 18th century music. She guested at festivals such the Händel-Festspielen Halle, Biennale München, Bad Hersfelder Festspielen and International Kirkemusikfestival Oslo and performed in concerts with orchestras such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Halle, Instrumental ensembles of the RSB and DSO or the Stettiner Philharmoniker. She collaborates regularly ; especially with Baroque ensembles such as the Lautten Compagney Berlin (Director: Wolfgang Katschner), Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Leipziger Barockorchester and Les Temperamens Variations Paris. Concert tours have taken her her to France, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and this season to Norway.

In May 2014, Johanna Knauth made her debut as Romilda in George Frideric Handel's Serse at the Goethe-Theater in Bad Lauchstädt with the Lautten Compagney Berlin under the direction of Wolfgang Katschner. A little later she was Eblouie Barbichette in Frank Hilbrich's staging of Bohuslav Martinů's opera Les Trois Souhaits (The Three Wishes) at the Universität der Künste Berlin. In 2016 attracted attention her jump-in as a Flying Princess in Der Schuhu und die fliegende Prinzessin by Udo Zimmermann in a university staging by Matthias Oldag in Leipzig. In 2015 she sang the role of Diana in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld at the festival Dorf macht Oper, where she would perform in 2016 the female lead role of Altisidora in the opera Don Quixote chez la Duchesse engaged by Joseph B. de Boismortier. In the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons she was also engaged as a first boy at the Oper Leipzig.

The preliminary highlight of the 2017-2018 season was Johanna Knauth's debut at the Berliner Philharmonie with the Mass in C minor by W.A. Mozart. Since then she was also apopeared at the International Kirkemusikfestival in Oslo with the Staats- und Domchor Berlin and the Lautten Compagney Berlin under the direction of Kai-Uwe Jirka and in Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) by J.S. Bach with the Sächsisches Vocalensemble and the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle conducted by Matthias Jung. Re-invitations recently took her back to Paris to collaborate with Les Temperamens Variations in J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor (BWV 232), as well as in the Berliner Philharmonie, where she sang the role of Hanne in Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten. Further highlights in 2018 include a concert tour to Latvia with G.F. Handel's oratorio Jephta and her debut as Donna Anna in W.A. Mozart;s Don Giovanni in a production of "Szene12" in Dresden.

In addition to the concert podium and the opera stage, Johanna Knauth has special love of Lieder, to which she devotes herself with enthusiasm. She gave Lieder recitals with Eric Schneider, Nicholas Rimmer, Daniel Heide, Thorsten Kaldewei and Norbert Biermann.
