Kölner Domchor (Choir)

Founded: 1863 - Köln (Cologne), Germany

The Kölner Domchor (Cologne Cathedral Choir) was founded in 1863 and continues the documented tradition since the Middle Age of choral singing by boys and men's voices on the hohen Dom (high cathedral) of Cologne. The choral organization and pontifical chapter in the Kölner Dom Cologne is the main task of the Kölner Domchor, which could expand in recent years its musical scope through numerous concerts in Cologne and in the immense and abroad. The Kölner Domchor has toured to Belgium, France, England, Ireland, Austria, Italy and the Baltic republics, Latvia and Lithuania.

Since 1991, the Kölner Domchorcan be heard in the concert series " Geistliche Musik am Dreikönigenschrein"; also since 1995, regularly at the Kölner Philharmonie, where the young singers, sometimes together with the singers of the 1989 founded girls' choir of the Kölner Dom to form a choir gor larger projects (J.S. Bach, Gustav Mahler, Benjamin Britten) or projects with new committed music (Hans-Werner Henze, Peter Eötvös, John Zorn). The participation at the City Theaters of Cologne and Krefeld / Mönchengladbach belonged in the past years as just to the life of the choir.

The musical repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant to works of the 20th century. The a cappella singing is always at the forefront of choral work. Since the beginnings of choral music at the Kölner Dom, the care of the Gregorian chant is the task of the singers at the Kölner Dom. The voices of the young men of the Kölner Domchor are given particular attention in the Choralschola des Kölner Domchores, through Gregorian chant, which, according to the manuscripts of St. Gall and Metz's semiological writing schools, are the basis for interpreting the songs.
