The Swiss soprano, Julia Küsswetter, had studied language a year in Rome, before she studied voice at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, the Graz University of Music and the University for Music and Performing Arts in Munich, under Josef Loibl and Helmut Deutsch, and completed her studies in 2003 with a Concert Diploma. Following her studies, she was awarded a scholarship by the Deutscher Bühnenverein (German Theatre Association). She also gained vital inspiration from various master-classes given by Emma Kirkby, Barbara Schlick, Henriette Meyer-Ravenstein and Ruth Ziesak. She currently receives regular tutoring from Beata Heuer in Freiburg. In 1997 she was a prize winner at the German national young musicians' competition "Jugend musiziert", and in 2003 and 2006 she reached the semi-finals of the International Hans Gabor Belvedere singing competition in Vienna.
In 2001 and 2002, Julia Küsswetter put in guest performances at the Munich Biennale, where she sang, among others, the lead female role in the première of Jörg Widmann's Monologue For Two. From 2004 to 2006 she was a permanent ensemble member at the Chemnitz Opera. Since 2006, she has returned with renewed energy to her concert work, being a regular guest at the Bad Hersfeld Opera Festival since 2005, where she appeared as Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel in 2008. To celebrate the 800-year anniversary of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia in 2007, she sang the title role in Franz Liszt's oratorio The Legend of St. Elisabeth with overwhelming success. In 2009 she was invited to give guest performances at the International Lake Constance Festival and the International Bach Festival in Schaffhausen.
Together with pianist Jacqueline Stoop, Julia Küsswetter formed the duo "Romantikzyklus" (Romantic Cycle) in 2006, which is dedicated to the synaesthetic treatment of lied programmes.
Julia Küsswetter works with the Münchner Philharmoniker, Münchner Symphoniker, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Piano Possibile and Ingolstadt Georgian Chamber Orchestra and sings under renowned conductors such as Gary Bertini, David Stahl, Siegfried Heinrich, Beat Raaflaub, Ulrich Nicolai and Christoph Hammer. Julia Küsswetter has sung all the major concert roles of her vocal fach, and has had engagements all over Europe. She now resides near Zürich.
A CD recording of cantatas by Max Bruch and radio recordings for Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting), Südwestrundfunk (Southwest Broadcasting) and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (Central German Broadcasting) document her artistic achievement. |
