The American tenor and voice teacher, Eric Laine, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree Summa Cum Laude in Music Education from the University of Houston, specializing in both voice and classical saxophone (2011-2016); and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas (2018-2020). He is working toward a Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance and pedagogy at the University of Houston Moores School of Music (since 2020), and currently completing coursework for a Certificate in Vocology at the Utah Center for Vocology in Salt Lake City, Utah under the tutelage of Dr. Ingo Titze (since 2021).
Acknowledged for his “vocal allure” and “fiery declamation” (San Diego Story), Eric Laine has gained recognition as an innovative artist both on stage and in recital. He was Staff Singer at Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston, Texas (June 2013-June 2018). During the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons, he was a regular ensemble member with Houston Grand Opera. As a soloist, he has sung Peter Quint in B. Britten's The Turn of the Screw (Red River Lyric Opera, 2017), Dudley in Little Red’s Most Unusual Day (Opera in the Heights, 2018), Gepetto/Cat in Pinocchio (Opera in the Heights, 2018), Apollo in the American premiere of Coronide (UNT Czech Festival, 2018), Noël in Le testament de la tante Caroline (UNT Opera Theatre, 2018), Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (UNT Opera Theatre, 2019), Tantale in La descente d’Orphée aux enfers (American Baroque Opera Co., 2019), Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola (Moores Opera Center, 2021), the title role in B. Britten's Albert Herring (Moores Opera Center, 2021), Henrik in A Little Night Music (Moores Opera Center, 2021), Vašek in The Bartered Bride (Moores Opera Center, 2022), and Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (UNT Opera Theatre, 2022).
Recently, Eric Laine made his European debut as Il Podestà in W.A. Mozart's La finata giardiniera with the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest (2022), a role that he then reprised with Opera Neo in San Diego, California (2022). This season (2022-2023), he returns to Moores Opera Center as Alfred and Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus (2023) and Mercury Chamber Orchestra (Director: Antoine Plante) as the tenor soloist in J.S. Bach's Coffee Cantata (BWV 211) (2023), along with several other recital and concert appearances.
Equally active in singing concert repertoire, Eric Laine has been featured as a tenor soloist in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Symphony of the Hills, 2021), George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J. Haydn's Missa in Angustiis, Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G Major, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Miserere, and J.S. Bach's Christ lag in Todesbanden (BWV 4), among others. He is an avid promoter of art song, often creating themed interdisciplinary programs of chamber music and visual art. Most recently, a portfolio of materials from his recital In Pursuit of Self was selected as the graduate winner of the 2020 University of North Texas Pi Kappa Lambda Scholarship Competition. Previously, he was awarded a travel grant to serve as an Art of Song fellow in the 2019 Toronto Summer Music Festival.
Eric Laine was Assistant Choir Director at Baines Middle School in Missouri City, Texas (August 2016-June 2018). He is a teaching fellow in applied voice and vocal pedagogy at University of Houston Moores School of Music (since August 2020). Additionally, he serves on the voice faculty at Lone Star College-University Park. He has also been Saxophone Instructor at his own studio in Houston, Texas (August 2011-May 2016) and Voice Instructor at his own studio in Fort Worth, Texas (since September 2018). He currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas. He is represented by Vocal Artists Management Services. |
