The Danish bass-baritone, Morten Frank Larsen, studied at the Jyske Conservatorium in Aarhus and in master-classes of Josef Greindl and Gino Bechi. At the Aarhus Summer Opera he gave his debut as an opera singer in the part of Tarquinius in The rape of Lucretia; his debut outside Denmark took place at Bad Lauchstädt in the title role of Don Giovanni.
In 1997 Morten Frank Larsen went for three years to Braunschweig, since 2000 he is in Vienna, where he regularly performs at both Volksoper and Wiener Staatsoper. He is frequently heard at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, where he, among others, performed Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore or in Aarhus (Pelléas / Pelléas et Mélisande). In Sevilla and at Teatro Comunale di Bologna he sang in 1999 and 2002 Heerrufer in Lohengrin, in Salzburg Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, at Teatro Massimo Palermo Jokanaan in Salome in 2005. He has also appeared at the Bayerische Staatsoper München as Jokanaan in Salome, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (2005-2006 season, Nathan in Maws' Sophie’s Choice and Jokanaan), and most recently as Mandryka in Arabella at both the Wiener Staatsoper and the Opernhaus Zürich.
Morten Frank Larsen's repertoire contains about 40 roles, among which are Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Belcore (L'Elisir d’Amore), Riccardo (I Puritani), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Posa (Don Carlo), Germont (La Traviata), the title role in Eugen Oneguin, Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Marcello (La Bohème), Sharpless (Madame Butterfly), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Danilo (Die lustige Witwe), Zar Peter (Zar und Zimmermann), Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) or the title role in Luigi Dallapiccola’s Il Prigioniero.
As a concert singer Morten Frank Larsen performs passions, masses and cantatas by J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn's Walpurgisnacht, W.A. Mozart’s and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Symanowski’s Stabat mater, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem or Orff's Carmina burana. He works with conducturs such as Daniele Gatti, Manfred Honek, Marc Piollet, Alexander Rahbari, Michael Schønwandt, Marc Soustrot, Marcello Viotti and Lothar Zagrosek. In April 2006 he sang Peer Gynt conducted by Gabor Ötvös in Genova.
In 2007-2008 season Morten Frank Larsen performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in Dresden and Bucharest with Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos conducting, Salome at the Bayerische Staatsoper with Kent Nagano, Die Fledermaus, I Pagliacci and Werther at the Wiener Staatsoper and Volksoper, as well as and a new production of Szenen aus dem Leben der Heiligen Johanna by Walter Braunfels at the Deutsche Berlin. Future plans besides his performances at both Volksoper and Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna are Il Barbiere di Sivgila with the Niederösterreichisches Tonkünstler-Orchester at the Vienna Musikverein and in St. Pölten, the title role of Don Giovanni in Copenhagen.
For his song recitals Morten Frank Larsen received the most prestigious Danish Award for singers, the "Aksel Schiøth Award". 2003 he received the "Eberhard-Wächter-Medaille" of the Vienna State Staatsoper. |
