The Swiss violinist and music teacher, Ernst Mayer-Schierning, received his first violin lessons at the age of 7. He studied violin at the Konservatorium von Luzern and subsequently at the Wiener Staatsakademie. He received his violin training from Carl Flesch, George Enescu (Paris), and Wolfgang Schneiderhan (Vienna). He also had personal contact with important contemporary musicians such as Richard Strauss and Otto Klemperer.
Ernst Mayer-Schierning began his career as First Concertmaster in Flensburg, followed by the same position at the Stadttheater Bielefeld. Alongside this, he pursued an intensive solo and chamber music career worldwide, and was ultimately appointed to the Hochschule für Musik Detmold from 1969 to 1991, where he held a professorship in violin from 1974 to 1991. He mentored prominent musicians, including members of the Vermeer Quartet and Camerata Chicago.
Ernst Mayer-Schierning passed away on March 15, 2021, at the age of 96. At the memorial service on March 20, 2021, twelve former students accompanied him with music by J.S. Bach, representing the entire class from around the world. |
