The American baritone, Timothy McDevitt, holds both his Bachelor and Master degrees in Music from the Juilliard School. He has been recognized as a New York District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Competition, a finalist in the Competizione dell’Opera at the Bolshoi in Moscow, the Lys Symonette Prize winner of the Lotte Lenya Competition, and twice as a finalist for the Atelier Lyrique at the Paris Opera (Opéra Bastille).
Timothy McDevitt has established himself among the industry’s most versatile performers of today. His unique ability to thrive in the worlds of both opera and musical theatre is clearly represented by his diverse schedule throughout the USA and abroad. Notable credits on the opera stage from previous seasons include the role of Le Mari On the opera stage he has starred in the role of Le Mari in Francis Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias at both the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (January 2014), L’Isola Disabitata at Alice Tully Hall, Allazim in W.A. Mozart's Zaide with the New World Symphony, La Fanciulla del West with the New York City Opera, and Paul in Les Enfants Terribles with the North Carolina Opera. His numerous theatre and concert credits include the Emmy Award winning Carousel for Live from Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Guys and Dolls at Carnegie Hall, Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra, South Pacific at Ash Lawn (July 2016), The Secret Garden at Baltimore Center Stage/Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Dreyfus Affair at BAM, Thou Swell with the NY City Ballet, L. Bernstein's Mass with the Philadelphia Orchestra, several appearances with NY City Center Encores: Brigadoon, Me & My Girl, The New Yorkers, and Lady be Good. Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion for NPR, St Plan in Four Saints In Three Acts with the Mark Morris Dance Group at BAM, various appearances with Steve Blier and the New York Festival of Song, and apprenticeships with Central City Opera and the Wolf Trap Opera.
Highlights from the 2016-2017 season include Lt Cable in South Pacific at Ash Lawn Opera, The New Yorkers for Encores at NY City Center, Colonel Picquart The Dreyfus Affair at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Jonathan Dawe’s Nero and the Fall of Lehman Brothers with Ensemble Echappe, Thou Swell with the New York City Ballet and Enrico in J. Haydn’s L’Isola Disabitata with the American Classical Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. The 2017-2018 season included Riff West Side Story with Tokyo’s NHK Symphony Orchestra and with Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, L. Bernstein's Mass with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Brigadoon for the New York City Center Gala, Happy La Fanciulla del West at New York City Opera, Kate Soper’s new opera Romance of the Rose for Wet Ink Music Productions, Me and My Girl for Encores at NY City Center, Alice with the Manhattan Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, and the title-role Dear Edvard at National Sawdust, Arena Stage, and the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse. 2018 also saw the release of two albums; L. Bernstein's Mass on the Deutsche Grammophon label, and Brigadoon with Ghostlight Records. The 2019-2020 season included his debut in Germany as Harry Easter in Kurt Weill's Street Scene at Oper Köln, Maximillian in L. Bernstein’s Candide with the Philadelphia Orchestra alongside actor Bradley Cooper, Call Me Madam with NY City Center Encores, Bruce Ismay in Titanic in Greenville, Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Omnium Sanctorum with the American Classical Orchestra, and a return to Ravinia Festival for the revival of L. Bernstein's Mass with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, later broadcast on PBS Great Performances. He was also seen in season two, episode six of Dickinson on AppleTV+
In the 2022-2023 season, Timothy McDevitt joins the roster of the Metropolitan Opera covering in the new production of Terrence Blanchard’s Champion. This season also includes William in The Fall of the House of Usher at OrpheusPdx (August 2022), Maximilian in Candide with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, concerts with the Winston Salem Symphony, and performances of his original cabaret Erwartung //{Expectation} for The Metropolitan Opera Club, Ludlow House, The Century Association, and the Park Avenue Armory Avant-Garde. The accompanying short film is also screened at the Long Beach Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia film festivals.
Timothy McDevitt is on the Vocal Arts Faculty at Manhattan School of Music.
