The New Zealander tenor, Kent McIntosh, began his professional musical life as a full time French Horn player in the RNZ Navy Band. He began singing at age 19, focusing on choral music, most notably with the prestigious NZ Youth Choir. He studied music in New Zealand, Sydney and at Canberra School of Music, where he graduated with Master of Music degree in 2001 and won the Kornfeld full Scholarship.
Kent McIntosh's roles include Tamino and Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, title role in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, Quint in B. Britten's The Turn of the Screw, Don Basilio in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (Canberra), Servant/Chauffeur in Capriccio, Registrar in Madama Butterfly (Opera Australia). He has sung as soloist in Oratorio on approximately 70 occasions. Highlights include: George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Monteverdi Vespers, J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and J.S. Bach Magnificats, C. Orff's Carmina Burana, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, J. Haydn's The Creation, Puccini’s Gloria and L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.
Kent McIntosh performed with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra in several concerts, and also at the Opera Australia 2004 NYE Gala. Has given over 30 song recitals in total, performing either in a solo capacity, or with his chamber group ‘the Tasman Soloists’. His 2007 recital with pianist Robert Greene was nominated by Canberra music critics as one of the annual top 10 performances of classical music in the ACT. He has been broadcast twice live on ABC Classic FM, most recently in B. Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings on ‘Sunday Live’.
Kent McIntosh has recently concluded an illustrious 20 years in the fulltime chorus at Opera Australia to begin his studies in Education (Music) at University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales. During his time at Opera Australia he performed approximately 3,000 times at the Sydney Opera House, Arts Centre Melbourne or the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. He continues working on a part-time basis, with contracts in Aida and Attila in the upcoming Sydney Winter Season. He currently lives in Sidney, New South Wales, Australia. |
