The Belgian tenor and music pesagogue, Teun Michiels, has graduated with great distinction from the Royal Carillon School “Jef Denyn” in Mechelen (Belgium). He was appointed city carillonneur by the town of Diest in 2005. He was for almost 10 years the youngest musician to have been awarded this post in Belgium.
Teun Michiels' colourful tenore di grazia voice gracefully sculpts every musical part with the utmost respect for authentic performance practice. Aside from the large-scale oratorio repertoire such as J.S. Bach’s Passions and George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Teun’s portfolio also includes works by Georg Philipp Telemann, W.A. Mozart, Rossini, Berlioz, Charles Gounod and Benjamin Britten. In addition, the Carmina Burana (C. Orff) plays an important role in his career.
Teun Michiels has collaborated with a variety of orchestras and ensembles such as the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Die Bergische Symphoniker (Germany), Euterpe Baroque Consort (Director: Bart Rodyns), La Passione, Nederlandse Händelvereniging, Choeur Symphonique de Liège and Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino.
As a teacher, Teun Michiels is one of the most promising singing-pedagogues of his generation in the Low Countries. Although not even 40 years old yet, he can rely on almost 20 years of teaching experience, including Masterclasses. Teun developed a highly efficient voice technique, bringing extraordinary benefits to many singers, including colleagues on the stage. Facts, functionality and science are the core; passion, humor and dreaming the shell. Teun founded and presides Voice.Academy, an extraordinary academy where art, science, passion and education meet through the voice.
Teun Michiels is often asked to partake in juries for competitions, entrance and public exams and festivals (e.g. European Musicfestival for Young People, Belfius Classics, …). For Teun this discipline constitutes a vital part within the educational field.
Together with the City Council of Diest, Teun Michiels organizes the International Carillon Festival as artistic director, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015. He has been invited all over the world (Scandinavia, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, USA, Russia …) to play carillon recitals. |
