The Spanish baritone, Julián Millán, is PhD student in Philosophy, Master in Comparative Literature, Master in Philology. At the age of 4 he started his violin studies at the Academia Zoltán Kodály de Molina de Segura (Murcia). He studied singing in Córdoba with Yolanda Vigil, and later he specialized in Early Music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel, Switzerland), with Gerd Türk and Marcel Boone, graduating with Master of Music degree, specialised in Historically Informed Performance. He took also music improvement courses, choral conducting and Kodály Method. He has attended master-classes of Lied taught by Thomas Hampson, Christoph Prégardien, Wolfram Rieger, Dietrich Henschel and Thomas Quasthoff, as well as Carlos Mena, Richard Levitt, Andreas Scholl and David Mason in the interpretation of Early Music.
Julián Millán began his solo career as a child singer at the Coral Kodály, with whom he sang for years on tours throughout Europe (Spain, Germany, Belgium, France). He has incarnated roles in operas such as La Calisto by Cavalli, Le nozze di Figaro by W.A. Mozart, Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, L'Orfeo by Monteverdi, Orpheus by Georg Philipp Telemann, among others.
In the field of the oratorio, Julián Millán has interpreted the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, Cantatas BWV 180, BWV 56, BWV 82 by J.S. As an emsemble singer, Julián Millán is a member of the RIAS-Kammerchor (Berlin), Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), Vocalconsort Berlin, La Hispanoflamenca, La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall), and Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart (Directors: Helmuth Rilling & Hans-Christoph Rademann). Likewise, he has worked under the direction of conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Jordi Savall, Sigiswald Kuijken, Krzysztof Penderecki, Pablo Heras-Casado, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Helmuth Rilling, Peter Dijkstra, Hermann Max, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Daniel Reuss, Andrea Marcon, Lothar Zagrosek, Marek Janowski, Pierre Cao, Luca Guglielmi, Christopher Moulds, Michael Thomas, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, among others.
Julián Millán has sung at numerous European music festivals such as the Setimana musicale di Siena, Festspiel Baden-Baden, Festival de Saintes, Rencontres musicales de Vézelay, Festival d'Ambronay, Festival La Chaise Dieu, Semana de Música Religiosa de Cuenca, Festival de Música de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Festival de Música Antigua de Sevila (FeMÀS), Semana de Música Antigua de Estella, Laus Polyphoniae, Festival van Flaanderen, Festival de Luzern, Festival Vlanders Mechelen, Edinburgh International Festival, Festival Sorèze, Nits de Classic (Girona), etc., as well as in various cities of Korea and Japan.
Julián Millán has recorded CD's for record labels such as Phi, Harmonia Mundi, Eloquentia, etc. and for radio and television: RBB Kultur Radio, Deutschland Radio, Radio Klara, France Musique, Art, Catalunya Radio, RNE, etc.
During 2013, Julián Millán visited numerous theaters (Opéra de Vichy, Opéra de Reims, Palais Bozar of Brussels, TAP de Poitiers, Opéra-Théâtre de Saint-Etienne, etc.), playing the role of Pastore in L'Orfeo by Monteverdi in the frame of the Academie d'Ambronay under the musical direction of Leonardo García-Alarcón. Likewise, he assumes the main role of Georg Philipp Telemann's Orpheus under the direction of Martin Gester and Le Parlement de Musique (Strasbourg) in the frame of the Academie Européene Géneration Baroque. In 2013, he also sang Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 by J.S. Bach, in the concert hall De Doelen (Rotterdam) with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Reuss, and participated in the Acadèmia de Formació of La Capella Reial de Catalunya under the direction of Jordi Savall with performances at the Auditori de Barcelona and the Chapelle Royale de Versailles.
Among his engagements for the 2014-2015 season was the role of Apollo in L'Orfeo by Monteverdi in a co-production of the Staatsoper Berlin and the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests, under the musical direction of Pablo Heras-Casado and together with the Freiburger Barockorchester. Notable were his appearances in theaters such as the Nederlandse Oper in Amsterdam (Netherlands), Teatr Wielki in Warsaw (Poland), Marinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (Russia), Grand Thèâtre in Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Baden-Baden Festival (Germany), Opéra de Lille (France), Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Berlin, Germany), Grieg Hall of Bergen (Festival Bergen, Norway). In April 2014, he sang Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 by J.S. Bach at Konzerthaus Berlin with the Konzerthaus-Orchester Berlin under the direction of Iván Fischer, and in September 2014 the Cantata BWV 105 by J.S. Bach again with the Konzerthaus Orchester under the direction of Iván Fischer. In June 2014 he performed works by G.F. Handel and Johann Mattheson with Akamus (Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin) under the direction of Bernhard Forck at the Händel Festival in Halle (Germany). In June and July 2014 he performed respectively the role of Noé in Il Diluvio Universale by Michelangelo Falvetti and La Daphne by Marco da Gagliano together with Cappella Mediterranea and under the direction of Leonardo García-Alarcón.
