The American tenor, Earnest Murphy Jr., garduated in 1954 from the 1954 Stetson University School of Music. He holds a master’s degree in music literature from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y.; and a professional diploma from Columbia University in New York City.
Earnest Murphy toured North America, South America and Europe as a member of New York Pro Musica; and has given solo and guest artist performances with many of the world’s great orchestras. He was also a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. In August 2003 Earnest Murphy gave alumni recital at Stetson University, His program ranged from classical to gospel music, and included the premiere of five songs written for him by award-winning composer Kari Juusela, who served as associate dean and teaches composition at the School of Music. Michael Rickman, professor of piano, accompanied Murphy during the recital.
In addition to his long career as a performer, Earnest Murphy taught music in public schools for 20 years and tutored privately. Now chair of Stetson’s School of Music Board of Advisors, he received an honorary doctorate from Stetson in 1994. |
