The Italian conductor, Gianandrea Noseda, studied piano, composition and conducting in Milan. He furthered his conducting studies with Donato Renzetti, Myung-Whun Chung and Valery Gergiev. In 1994 he won the Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition.
Gianandrea Noseda started his international journey in 1997, when he was invited by to become the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg where he also set up the ‘Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra’ and served as its Principal Conductor. Since 1998 he is the Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués, between 1999 and 2003 he has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Turin between 2003 and 2006. In addition, since 2000 he serves as Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival (one of the historical Italian Music festivals).
In December 2001, Gianandrea Noseda was named Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Manchester, and assumed the post in September 2002. In July 2003, Noseda extended his contract with the orchestra to 2008. Live performances of L.v. Beethoven’s complete symphonies from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Noseda in 2005 have attracted 1.4 million download requests in a BBC trial which was offered as part of Radio 3’s The Beethoven Experience. In the following years, complete cycle of the symphonies by Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Johannes Brahms have been made available on download to the worldwide audience by the record company Chandos Records. In October 2006, Noseda extended his contract for another two years and his title was changed to Chief Conductor, a way to pride the total commitment and the significant achievements of this collaboration. His intense collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra includes studio recordings, subscription concerts at the Bridgewater Hall, the annual appearance at the Proms in London and an extensive touring activity in Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Austria, Germany and Japan: after the success of their first tour they returned in March 2008 with an extensive presence in Tokyo in addition to concerts in Korea. In September 2008 he had the privilege to conduct the “Penultimate night at the Proms” with L.v. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Noseda is scheduled to step down from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra chief conductorship after the 2010-2011 season and to take the title of conductor laureate.
Gianandrea Noseda has appeared all over the world with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA; Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Montreal Symphony Orchestra in Canada, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe in the UK; Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Goetheborg Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Scandinavia; Tokyo Symphony and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan; Orchestre du Capitol de Toulouse and Orchestre National de France; Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in Germany; and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In Italy, in addition to his privileged relationship with Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, he appeared with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala and Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Highlights of the 2007-2008 season have been the debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Center, the gala concert with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in the frame of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, the return to the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. Future engagements will include the debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and Orchestre de Paris.
As an opera conductor, Gianandrea Noseda has led the Mariinsky Theatre - both on tour and in St. Petersburg - in new productions of opera and ballet: he has presented for the first time ever in St. Petersburg La sonnambula by Bellini (1998), Così fan tutte by Mozart (2002) and Il trittico by Puccini (2003). Since then he has been returning every summer for the “Stars of White Nights Festival”. In 2002 he made his Metropolitan Opera debut, conducting Prokofiev’s War and Peace followed by La forza del destino in 2006: with Un ballo in maschera in the 2007-2008 season Noseda has continued a close cooperation with the major Opera House in USA to continue with Il trovatore (2009), La traviata (2010), Lucia di Lammermoor (on tour in Japan in 2011) and Macbeth (2012). With a new production of Verdi’s Il trovatore he also made his debut at the Orange Festival in July 2007 broadcast live by the French National TV.
Gianandrea Noseda is the new Music Director of Teatro Regio in Turin since September 2007 after a successful collaboration which started in 2004. In his first season has conducted Falstaff and a compelling new production of Salome directed by Robert Carsen. This was followed by three exciting new productions: Massenet’s Thaïs (the DVD has been recently released by Arthaus), Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and Verdi’s La traviata directed by Laurent Pelly. With the TRT he has also begun an increasingly important international activity. The the tour of Germany in May 2008, will lead to a tour in Japan and China in July-August 2010 and to the debut at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris in May 2011.
Gianandrea Noseda is very sensitive to the needs of the young generation of musicians. He has been working closely with youth orchestras worldwide conducting: the Joven Orquesta Nacional de Espana (JONDE),the Orchestra of the Royal College of Music in London, the National Youth Orchestra of United Kingdom, the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana of Fiesole.In the summer of 2010 he will embark on a tour of Poland, The Netherlands, Germany and Italy with the European Union Youth Orchestra . He has offered Conducting Masterclasses to young conductors at the Royal Northern College of Music as well as in the frame of his activities at the Stresa Festival.
Since 2002 Gianandrea Noseda is an exclusive artist of Chandos: his extensive discography includes conducted several recordings with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with music by Prokofiev (the first complete recording of The Stone Flower), Karlowitz, Dvorak, Smetana, Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Rachmaninov and Gustav Mahler. An extensive survey of the music of the Italian cof the 20th century has included recordings by composers as Ottorino Respighi, Luigi Dallapiccola (including the world premiere recording of L. Dallapiccola's Partita), Wolf-Ferrari (Diapason d’or in France) and Alfredo Casella. The complete cycle of Franz Liszt’s Symphonic works in 5 volumes has already received the acclaim of the international press. In cooperation with the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra have recorded the operas Francesca da Rimini, The Miserly Knight and Aleko as well as the Symphonies Nos, 1 and 2. Conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker he has also recorded for DGG Anna Netrebko’s first album.
For his activity in Italy and abroad, Gianandrea Noseda has received the honour of “Cavaliere Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana”. |
