Oslo Barokkanerne (Instrumental & Vocal Baroque Ensemble)

Founded: 2018 - Oslo, Norway

Barokkanerne, with its new artistic director, lutenist Jadran Duncumb, is one of the main pillars of the Norwegian early music community. In 2018, the ensemble merged with the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra. Both ensembles were founded in the late 1980's as the very first independent professional Baroque orchestras on original instruments in Scandinavia. Since 2020, the Barokkanerne vocal ensemble has become a significant part of the ensemble's artistic profile, which now covers a rich repertoire from the 17th to the early 19th centuries.

They have appeared at numerous festivals throughout Europe, in recent years, at the Tage Alte Musik Regensburg, Stockholm Early Music Festival, Bergen International Music Festival, Helsinki Early Music Festival, Georgian Concert Society Edinburgh and Nordic Lights Festival in Berlin. In Norway, in addition to having its own concert series in Oslo with the Oslo Early festival as an important arena, the ensemble has also guested at Olavsfest, the Northern Norway Festival, the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and the Oslo International Church Music Festival. In 2024, the ensemble played at the Gloger Festival in Kongsberg and the Bergen Festival. The ensemble is now a part of a classical concert series in Oslo which also includes the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and Oslo Quartet Series.

The merged ensembles have both been involved in a number of productions for Norwegian Radio and Television (NRK) and released five CD productions: Bellezza Crudel Vivaldi cantatas with soprano Tone Wik (2L), Empfindsamkeit with symphonies and concertos by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Totally Telemann with orchestral music by Georg Philipp Telemann, Recordare Venezia with recorder virtuoso Ingeborg Christophersen and Er heißet Wunderbar! - Advent and Christmas cantatas by J.S. Bach and his contemporaries.

From spring 2023, the Norwegian lutenist, Jadran Duncumb, has been chosen as a new artistic leader of Barokkanerne. Jadran Duncumb has an active international career as a soloist and chamber musician, and is planning new exciting concert programmes and recordings with the ensemble for the years to come.

Barokkanerne collaborates regularly with outstanding international performers as guest leaders and soloists. The unique contributions of musicians such as Kati Debretzeni, Andrew Lawrence-King, Alfredo Bernardini, Carlos Mena and Kristian Bezuidenhout, are genuinely appreciated by the ensemble and audiences alike.
