The American soprano and composer, Christine Papania, holds a degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she happily spent her time between the Jacobs School of Music and the Early Music Institute, studying with Mary Ann Hart and Paul Elliott. While at Indiana University, Christine sang in the Early Music Institute’s ensemble Contentus, led by Paul Elliott and Nigel North and the early music ensemble, Indiana University Pro Arte Singers, under the direction of William Jon Gray.
As a vocalist, Christine Papania is a passionate soloist and choral singer with particular interests in both contemporary and early music. As a composer, she takes musical cues from these two periods and combines them with her wide ranging music influences to create deep and emotional compositions through electronic music production techniques. Christine is known for her natural musicality and vivid musical imagination and is thrilled to be involved in New York’s diverse and inspiring music scene.
Christine Papania has appeared as a soloist in George Frideric Handel's Dixit Dominus, J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (), Monteverdi’s Vespers, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Heinrich Schütz’ Historia der Geburt Jesu Christi, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël, Gustav Holst’s A Choral Fantasia, Op. 51, Igor Stravinsky’s Four Russian Songs, Ola Gjeilo’s Luminous Night of the Soul, the World Premiere of Paul Rudoi’s Everyone Sang, and choral works from Finland, Latvia, Sweden, and Norway. In May 2014, Christine appeared as a soprano soloist for the World Premiere of Dreamweaver by Ola Gjeilo at Carnegie Hall.
An avid choral singer, Christine Papania is a member of the 32-voice professional choir, Manhattan Chorale, based in New York City. Past concert seasons included performances at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Merkin Concert Hall, Reformation Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C., and St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University.She has also performed in New York-based C4 (Choral-Composer/Conductor Collective), performing pieces written within the last 25 years and premiering and commissioning new choral works. While living in Milwaukee, Christine sang with the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, Wisconsin’s only professional women’s vocal ensemble Milwaukee Choral Artists, under the direction of Sharon Hanson, and The Florentine Opera Company in productions of Turandot, Susannah, and W.A. Mozart's Idomeno.
Influenced by post-classical electronic music, Christine Papania is co-composer and soprano for sacred music duo Ariadne. She also composes and produces music for her Baroque-inspired ambient/bass solo music project under the moniker Lanx. She sings each week at St. James’ Church on the Upper East Side as a choir member. She currently lives in in Brooklyn, New York. |
