The American baritone and voice teacher, Matthew Peterson, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music: Vocal Performance - from Colorado Christian University (2015); his Masters of Music degree in Vocal Performance from University of Denver (2017); and his Master of Musical Arts dregree in Voice from the prestigious Yale School of Music (2021), where he studied with the legendary Richard Cross. In 2019, he won 1st place in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild competition. His other accolades include placing as a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera's 2023 Laffont competition, and was recently won 3rd Place (the highest placing male singer) with the Palm Springs Opera Guild (2024).
Praised by the Colorado Spring's Gazette for his "stunning" singing with "power and beauty", Matthew Peterson is a baritone acclaimed for his rich voice and expressive acting. He has performed with several premiere musical organizations around the country including Central City Opera, the Colorado Ballet, Virginia Opera, the New England Symphony, The Mendocino Music Festival, and Opera Santa Barbara. His career highlights are the leading baritone roles in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni (Opera in the Ozarks, 2016), Cosí fan tutte (University of Denver, 2016; Mendocino Music Festival, 2024) and Le Nozze di Figaro (Opera Fort Collins, 2024; Opera Las Vegas, 2025) as well the Novice in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd (Central City Opera, 2019), Silvio from Pagliacci, (Opera in the Ozarks, 2016) and Dr. Malatesta from Don Pasquale. (Mendocino Music Festival, 2025). No stranger to the music of broadway, Matthew has played Signor Nacarelli in A Light in the Piazza (Opera Santa Barbara, 2023), Joseph in Dreamcoat, and Prince Harry in Once Upon a Mattress in addition to numerous other productions.
As a sought-after concert soloist Matthew Peterson has performed many of the most demanding works for baritone including Carmina Burana with the Colorado Ballet, Francis Poulenc's Le Bal Masque with the New England Symphony, Igor Stravinsky's Renard, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs, Haydn's Creation, and premiered the dance oratorio Ode to Nature that was recorded and released by Albion Records.
Matthew Peterson currently resides in Santa Barbara, California, where he performs with the resident opera company and teaches private voice lessons. Since September 2025, he is Adjunct Professor of Voice at Westmont College, Santa Barbara. |
