The American organist, choral conductor, composer and pianist, Austin Philemon, graduated summa cum laude as a Levine Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2013-2017), where he double-majored in German and Organ Performance, helping to found the university’s organ program with his teacher, Dr. Jacqueline Yost. He graduated with the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from the Manhattan School of Music (2017-2019), where he studied with Dr. Andrew Henderson.
Austin Philemon is an active performer, conductor, and composer based in the New York City area. As an organist, he has had the opportunity to perform recitals domestically including at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, St. Paul’s Chapel at Trinity Wall Street, and the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square, as well as abroad in Paris, France; Graz, Austria; Romainmôtier, Switzerland; Haarlem, Netherlands; and Modena, Italy. He most recently was chosen as a finalist for the University of Michigan Organ Improvisation Competition, and also received first prize in the George R. Mathison Memorial Competition.
Austin Philemon is also making a name for himself as a conductor, having conducted world premieres by Robert Paterson, Stephen Cabell, Gillian Rae Perry, and Nathaniel Heyder. He also served as assistant conductor for the UNC Charlotte Opera Workshop’s production of La Bohème.
Always an advocate for new music, as a composer of both traditional and electro-acoustic works Austin Philemon is actively receiving commissions to collaborate with artists. His most recent work, Curiouser and Curiouser for vocalist and live electronics was performed in April 2019 in New York City by Luke Paulino. Hae also recently enjoyed curating Fresh Pipes: a concert of world premieres for organ, in which he commissioned four composers to write new organ works as well as premiering one of his own.
Austin Philemon has served as Organist at New Covenant ARP Church (April 2010-February 2011); Organist/accompanist at Weddington United Methodist Church (February 2011-December 2014); Assistant to the General Director at Opera Carolina (May 2014-August 2015); Organ Scholar at Christ Episcopal Church Charlotte, North Carolina (December 2014-September 2017); Assistant Organist and Children's Choir Director at East River Catholics in New York (since September 2017); Music Administrator at Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity (since August 2019). Currently he serves as Assistant Organist and Children’s Choir Director at the combined parishes of St. John Nepomucene and St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, and works as Director of Music and Media at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, New York City (since September 2022). |
