Yury Makhrov (Tenor)

Born: Moscow, Russia

The Russian-German lyrical tenor, Yury Makhrov (formerly: Rostotsky), graduated with distinction from the Gnesin Academy of Music in Moscow, completing his Master’s degree in Opera in 2014. He refined his vocal artistry through the “Oper Oder Spree” program in Germany (2014) and the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro, Italy (2017). He has won several prestigious vocal competitions, including the IX Klaudia Taev Competition in Pärnu, Estonia (2015), the X Elena Obraztsova Competition in St. Petersburg (2015), the I Kozlovsky Tenor Competition in Moscow (2011), and the IX Zara Dolukhanova Competition in Königsberg (2010).

Yury Makhrov made his debut in 2014 as Damon in George Frideric Handel's Acis and Galatea under Peter Neumann at the Moscow House of Music. Other notable performances include Belfiore in W.A. Mozart's La finta giardiniera under Christoph Hagel in Berlin (2016), Brighella in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos with Vladimir Yurovsky at the Moscow Philharmonic (2017), and the Young Sailor in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde under Jan Latham-Koenig at Moscow's Novaya Opera Theater (2018). He also performed the lead role in the world premiere of Ilya Demutsky's contemporary opera Black Square in Moscow. Additionally, in 2018 and 2021, he participated in special opera projects as a guest soloist at the Bolshoi Theater.

Yury Makhrov's repertoire features diverse roles. In 2019, he performed Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte in St. Petersburg, Tebaldo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Kaunas Music Theater in Lithuania, and Lindoro in Rossini's L’italiana in Algeri in the Netherlands. In 2020, he sang Zelim in Antonio Vivaldi's La verità in cimento at the Immling Festival in Germany, Gomatz in W.A. Mozart's Zaide, and Lukas in Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten in Moscow. In 2021, he portrayed Narciso in Rossini's Il turco in Italia” in Lithuania and Estonia. Recent roles in 2022 include Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at Moscow’s Zaryadye Concert Hall and Tebaldo in Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Hvorostovsky Opera House in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia.

As a concert and oratorio singer, Yury Makhrov has performed Schubert’s Mass in Es dur at the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg (2016), the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Jeroen Felix conductor in 's Hertogenbosh, the Netherlands (2022), and tenor arias in the Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 in the Netherlands (2019, 2022). In 2019, he appeared as the tenor soloist in Scriabin’s Symphony No. 1 with the Russian National Orchestra under Mikhail Pletnev at the Montreux Septembre Musical Festival in Switzerland. His extensive concert repertoire includes tenor solos in G.F. Handel's Messiah; L.v. Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Mass in C dur; J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D major BWV 243 and Mass in B minor BWV 232; W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Coronation Mass, and Grosse Mass; F.J. Haydn's Mass in Honor of St. Nicholas; Igor Stravinsky's Pulcinella; and Sergei Rachmaninov's Vespers. In addition, he toured China, performing on the Philharmonic stages of Shanghai, Harbin, and Guangzhou.

Recent highlights include performances of Orff''s Carmina Burana in Saigon, Vietnam (2022), Moscow (2023), and Dresden (2024). He is also scheduled to appear as Der Jüngling in the Berlin stage version of Goldschmidt's oratorio Die sieben Todsünden (2024). He currently lives in Germany.
