Robert Sellier (Tenor)

Born: 1979 - Munich, Bavaria, Germany

The German tenor, Robert Sellier, received his first singing lessons at the Bayerischen Singakademie with Hartmut Elbert. After high school he enrolled at the Musikhochschule Augsburg his studies and graduated with honors. He attended master-classes with Margaret Baker-Genovesi, Margreet Honig, Gerd Uecker and Rudolf Jansen, and Lied class with Edith Wiens, and an oratorio class with James Taylor. He also studied in the master-class with Jan Hammar, at which he awarded the grade 1.0. In 2003 he received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Association of Augsburg and in 2004 won first prize in singing competition of the Hochschule für Musik Augsburg-Nürnberg.

Robert Sellier’s oncert repertoire ranges from Monteverdi's Marienvespers and J.S. Bach's oratorios to works of the 20th and 21st centuries, including several world premieres. He has sung with various period instrument ensembles as the Neuen Hofkapelle München, La Banda, Barockorchester L'arpa festante München, L'Orfeo Barockorchester (Director: Michi Gaigg) and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He undertook a tour to Switzerland as guest of the vocal ensemble Die Singphoniker and his concert engagements include with Enoch zu Guttenberg and the Dresdner Philharmonie. CD and DVD recordings on Oehms Classics, ORF and Deutsche Grammophon, as well as recitals with F. Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise round off his concert career.

His operatic roles so far include Paolino (D. Cimarosa’s die heimliche Ehe), Ferrando (W.A. Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte) Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Belmonte (Entführung aus dem Serail), Orfeo (J. Haydn’s Orfeo ed Euridice), Stilicone (A. Steffani’s Alarico), Charly/Billy (K. Weill’s Mahagonny-Songspiel). Since 2002, Robert Sellier has been an ensemble member at the Freien Landestheater Bayern and currently (2008) can be heard there as Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (at Munich’s Carl Orff Saal). In 2006 he sang the role of Emilio in W.A. Mozart's Il sogno di Scipione at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and at the Salzburg Festival. At the Theater Bielefeld, he performed for a short term the role of Belmonte; similarly, at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Count Almaviva in Rossini's Barbier. In 2006-2007 season he was engaged at the Theater Augsburg with the role of Rodrigo in Otello and Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte.

Since 2007-2008 season Robert Sellier is a member of the ensemble of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. He made his debut at this opera house with the role of Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro. In the premiere of E.T.A. Hoffmann's musical comedy Liebe und Eifersucht he sang the title role of Enrico and appeared in the Munich premiere of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance and showed his comedic talent as Frederic. He also impressed in Hans Henning Paar’s Die Winterreise with his interpretation of the traveler in Hans Zender composed version of Schubert's Winterreise.
