The amertican neuroscientist, pianist, tenor, countertenor, and composer, Noah Jacob Silverstein, is a senior double major in Neuroscience and Music at Middlebury College. He studies piano with Diana Fanning and voice with Carol Christensen. Previous teachers have included Mary Jane Austin-Reynolds, Michael Arnowitt, and William Chapman Nyaho. He is is an alumnus of the Interlochen Arts Camp in northern Michigan where he spent three summers. While at Interlochen he played in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak, sang in the Interlochen Festival Choir under the direction of Hugh Ferguson Floyd and David Fryling, and studied organ with Thomas Bara.
Noah Silverstein pursues an active musical life at Middlebury performing in recitals, operas, and musical theater productions. Recent events include the presentation of a solo vocal and piano recital, and performance as the lead tenor in Haydn’s opera buffa, La Canterina. He has also sung in operas with the Middlebury Opera Company, and in musicals such as Sondheim’s Sweeny Todd, in which he played the role of the Beadle. He is a member of the Middlebury College Choir, and will be touring with the ensemble to San Francisco over the upcoming spring break.
In addition to being a pianist and singer, Noah Silverstein is a composer. His work combines elements of early music practices, romanticism, and modern compositional techniques. His most recent project, a senior work undertaken under the supervision of Professor Peter Hamlin, is a Requiem for full choir and orchestra.
As a neuroscientist Noah Noah Silverstein is interested in a broad range of topics, from performance anxiety to neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. His current research regards the effects of activation of the noradrenergic system on cognition. He will spend the next two years pursuing research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston before ultimately pursuing an MD/PhD. He currently lives in Middlebury Vermont. |
