Kenneth Smith (Bass-Baritone)

Born: 1920 - Leeds, England

The English bass-baritone and teacher, Kenneth Smith, studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New York College of Music.

Kenneth Smith participated in the World Premiere of My Heart's In the Highlands, National Educational TV in 1970. He was engaged by NBC-TV Opera & New England Opera from 1950, Central City Opera in 1953, Chicago Lyric from 1955 to 1958, New York City Opera in 1956 & 1960, Washington Opera in 1959; Stadr Teater Zürich in 1962-1963, and Metropolitan Opera in 1963-1964. He participated in the American Premiers of Billy Budd (Britten) in 1951, Gloriana (Britten) in 1956, The Tempest (Martin) in 1956, and War & Peace (Prokofiev) in 1957. He specialised in symphonic repertoire for bass-baritone.

Recordings: with Columbia Masterworks, RCA-Victor, Concert Hall Society.

Kenneth Smith was married with Marguerite Prentice and had one son.
