Paul Smy (Tenor)

Born: England

The English tenor, Paul Smy, began his musical career as a chorister in King's College Choir Cambridge under Philip Ledger and Stephen Cleobury touring Europe, Australia, Hong Kong and Japan. While at King's, Paul was a soloist in recordings of Gabriel Fauré's Messe Basse and George Frideric Handel's Coronation Anthems.

In 1992, Paul Smy moved to Paris and co-founded the Mikrokosmos Youth Choir as assistant conductor and accompanist while simultaneously launching his solo career with performances of J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) and B Minor Mass (BWV 232) as well as Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas. In 1996, Paul became Assistant Conductor of the Paris Choral Society based at the American Cathedral.

Since 1998, Paul Smy has been based in the UK and continues to give regular performances both in the UK and abroad. He currently studies with Ameral Gunson and Neil Jenkins. His most recent performances include W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Haydn's Creation, Rossini's Stabat Mater, Robert Schumann's Faust, Charles Gounod's Redemption, Finzi's Intimations of Immortality and J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) for conductors including Paul Spicer, Brian Kay, Neil Jenkins, Stephen Cleobury and Robert Dean. His 2011-2012 season includes J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), G.F. Handel's Messiah, Saul and Solomon, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, Edward Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, B. Britten's War Requiem, L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ, Herbert Howells' Hymnus Paradisi, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, Camille Saint-Saëns' Requiem and W.A. Mozart's C Minor Mass.
