The American tenor, Steven Soph, obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music - Voice from the University of North Texas (2008); and his Master of Music degree in Voice - Early Music, Oratorio from Yale School of Music (2012), where he studied with renowned tenor James Taylor. He was a 2014 Carmel Bach Festival Adams Fellow and 2016 Oregon Bach Festival Vocal Fellow.
A "superb vocal soloist" (The Washington Post) possessing a "sweetly soaring tenor" (The Dallas Morning News) of "impressive clarity and color" (The New York Times), Steven Soph performs throughout North America and Europe. Described as an Evangelist “first-class across the board,” (Chicago Classical Review) he performed with the Chicago Chorale in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and with the Concord Chorale in the St. John Passion (BWV 245).
Steven performs with top American vocal ensembles including GRAMMY®-nominated Seraphic Fire and True Concord Voices & Orchestra; GRAMMY® Award-winning Conspirare and Roomful of Teeth; Trident; Yale Choral Artists; Cut Circle; Santa Fe Desert Chorale; Colorado Bach Ensemble; Apollo Master Chorale of Minneapolis; and Spire Chamber Ensemble.
Recent seasons' highlights include appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra in an all-George Frideric Handel program led by Ton Koopman; the New World Symphony and Seraphic Fire in Reich's Desert Music; Symphony Orchestra Augusta in J.S. Bach's B minor Mass (BWV 232); San Diego's Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra in W.A. Mozart's "Orphanage" Mass and Mass in C minor; Voices of Ascension in J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244); the Master Chorale of South Florida in W.A. Mozart's Requiem and Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass; Colorado Bach Ensemble in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244); Texas Choral Consort in Haydn's Creation; and the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra in G.F. Handel's Messiah.
Recent international performances include Festival Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg, Germany; Musica Sacra Festival, Maastricht, the Netherlands; and Festival Laus Polyphoniae, Antwerp, Belgium with Cut Circle, in addition to Festival de Arte y Ópera Contemporánea in Morelia, Mexico with Roomful of Teeth.
The 2016-2017 season marks Steven Soph’s return to The Cleveland Orchestra and Seraphic Fire for Igor Stravinsky's Threni id est Lamentationes Jeremiae Prophetae; the University of North Texas as Evangelist in the 1725 version of J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245); the Chicago Chorale for J.S. Bach's B minor Mass (BWV 232); True Concord Voices & Orchestra for J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243); Spire Chamber Ensemble for G.F. Handel's Messiah; Colorado Pro Musica for Haydn's Creation; and the Bach Society of St. Louis for W.A. Mozart's Mass in C minor.
