The Norwegian tenor, Magnus Staveland, studied at Lundehaugen Videregående Skole in Sandnes, Norway. He studied music at the State Academy of Music (Norges Musikkhøgskole) in Oslo, and at the Royal Opera Academy (Operaakademiet) in Copenhagen with Susanna Eken. He graduated in the summer of 2008.

Engagements have brought him a.o. to Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Regio in Torino, Teatro Real Madrid, Staatsoper Berlin, Innsbrucker Festwochen, Opéra Garnier Paris, Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Opera du Rhln Strasbourg, Opera Gamier Monaco, De Munt/Theatre de La Monnaie in Brussels, Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, Perm State Opera, Royal Swedish Opera, Norwegian National Opera, Royal Danish Opera, and lnnsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik.
Among opera roles Magnus Staveland has performed are Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte, Enea in Cavalli's La Didone, Medoro in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino, Aret in Haydn’s Philemon und Baucis, Ati in Gluck’s Aristeo, Giove in Gluck’s Bauci e Filemone, Giove in Martín y Soler’s La Dora Festeggiante, title role in Antonio Vivaldi's Catone in Utica, Lucano, Soldati 1 and Famiglian' 2 in L'lnooronazione di Poppea, Telemaco in ll Ritorno d'Ulisse, and Nature as well as Pane in Cavalli’s La Calisto; and many roles in operas by Monteverdi, George Frideric Handel, A. Vivaldi, Cavalli and Alessandro Scarlatti.

Magnus Staveland is a much sought after concert and oratorlo singer and he regulany appears in concert venues and festivals throughout Europe. He has built an unusually vast concert repertoire including works by Monteverdi, A. Scarlatti, J.S. Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, G.F. Handel, A. Vivaldi, Purcell, Gluck, Haydn, W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven, Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Grieg, Arnold Schoenberg, Benjamin Britten and contemporary works by Arne Nordheim, Ragnar Söderlind and Gisle Kvemdokk. He currently lives in Oslo, Norway.
Forthcoming highlights include Medoro in Haydn's Orlando Paladino at the Drottningholm Festival with the conductor Mark Tatlow; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Vlaamse Opera Antwerp and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte the Royal Swedish Opera as well as with Stavanger Symfoniorkester.
CD recordings include Celio in Handel's Germanico, Polifonte in A. Vivaldi’s Oracolo in Messenia, Fileno in Martin y Soler's Il Sogno and vocal music by Edvard Grieg. Haydn’s Orlando Paladino, in which he performed as Medoro, and Cavalli's La Didone, in which he had the role of Enea, were released on DVD. |
