Tom Sutcliffe (Counter-tenor, Critic)

Born: 1943 - Norwich, England

The English critic and counter-tenor, Tom Sutcliffe, studied at Oxford University from 1960 to 1963.

Tom Sutcliffe was English tutor at Central Tutorial School for Young Musicians (now Purcell School) from 1963 to 1965. Then he was Manager of Musica Reservata from 1965 to 1971. He sang as counter-tenor in Westminster Cathedral Choir from 1966 to 1970. He was advertisement manager, then editor of Music and Musicians from 1968 to 1973. He was Music, opera, and drama critic in Vogue from 1975 to 1987, and opera critic in The Guardian from 1973 to 1996, and in Evening Standard from 1996. He wrote the book ‘Believing in Opera’ (1996).
