Tulipa Consort (Instrumental Ensemble)

The Tulipa Consort, whose musical specialization is repertoire of the 17th and early 18th centuries, takes the stage in various combinations. Being based in Holland, the name of the ensemble was inspired by an event that happened at the beginning of the 17th century in the Low Countries, the so-called Tulpen Mania:

In the mid-16th century, the tulip found its way from Turkey via Vienna and Prague to the Low Countries, where it became a prized possession. In the 17th century it even became an object of financial speculation. However, in February 1637 the price suddenly fell and the trade bubble burst. Although the cause of the first ever stock market crash, the tulip has nevertheless become one of Holland’s national symbols.

The Tulipa Consort, founded in 2013 by the soprano Johannette Zomer and directed by her, has performed at the Göttingen Handel Festspiele, Festival de Saintes, Itinéraire Baroque Perigord, at the Holywell Music Room in Oxford and throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.

In 2015 the Tulipa Consort recorded its first CD, ‘Laudate!’, with sacred works by Antonio Vivaldi (Channel Classics). In Spring 2016 the album was released and presented at a special launch event at Radio Kootwijk. Their next CD project, with Dutch oboist Bart Schneemann, presents a selection of J.S. Bach repertoire (release Autumn 2017).
