The UCLU Symphony Orchestra is formed from the most talented and experienced instrumental players at UCL, offering them the chance to extend their orchestral experience through varied and challenging repertoire. Many players come to the orchestra as part of a natural progression on from County Youth Orchestras, Music College Junior Departments, or another university orchestra. However, the entire orchestra is re-auditioned every September in order to maintain the high musical standard, and in order to offer equal opportunity for selection to all interested students whether they are returning members, or undertaking their first year of study at UCL. Organised socials throughout the year, as well as post rehearsal drinks at the student bar provide another chance for orchestra members to get to know each other as well as other members of the society better, in a more relaxed environment.
The first term includes three concerts in churches around London, performing a combination of orchestral and choral repertoire, working with the Symphony Chorus. The second term is taken up with rehearsing for the UCOpera, which offers the orchestra members the unusual opportunity to accompany an underperformed opera, working as part of what has come to be known as one of the finest student opera companies in the UK. The performances take place in the final week of the spring term. During the summer term and exam period the orchestra disbands, although there are always opportunities for those who wish to keep their playing up, for example through volunteering or chamber and solo playing with the CMC.
